Baoli is a Punjabi word which refers to an open well. One will find steps leading down to the water level. Many such sacred wells were constructed during the times of the Gurus and are still a feature at many historic Gurdwaras.
The most popular baoli Sahib is found at Govindwal at the site built by Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh guru. This has 84 steps denoting the 84 lakh (which is written as 84,00,000 or 8.4 million) species of life forms on Earth. At this Baoli a grand staircase leads from ground level down to the water. This Baoli Sahib was contructed after Sikhs were prevented from fetching water from a local source. The digging started in 1556 and completed in 1559. In 1688, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji won the battle of Bhangani and reached Paonta Sahib. From Paonta Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh started his journey towards Anandpur Sahib and visited Raipur Rani and Nada Sahib (near Panchkula City of Haryana State) on the way.
Guru Gobind Singh reached on outskirts of village Dhakauli. There were many followers of Sikhi in the village because the village was founded by Baba Gurditta Ji (the eldest son of Sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji).
On hearing the news of Guru Gobind Singh's arrival, Chaudhry Ishar Das along with many villagers and taking many offerings reached to have blessings of Guru Gobind Singh. Guru Gobind Singh asked about the welfare of the village and the area.
Chaudhry said, with folded hands, that as there was no source of water in the village the people have to travel to the Sukhna River. Chaudhry requested that the village be blessed with water.
On hearing this, Guru Gobind Singh threw his 'Barchha' (a long pointed weapon) into the ground and clean water started flowing. Everyone fell on Guru Gobind Singh's feet with joy. Guru Gobind Singh provided money and asked the Chaudhry to construct a well. Guru Gobind Singh told them that this place would be known as Baoli Sahib.
Another Sikh, Bhai Kirpa Ram and his wife arrived and bowed before Guru Gobind Singh. Guru Gobind Singh asked him, 'What would you like?' Bhai Kirpa Ram felt uncomfortable speaking openly in the presence of villagers and asked for the Guru's blessings. Then his wife, Deesan, asked Guru Gobind Singh (in low voice) to be relieved of a disease and bless her with healthy children. She had been suffering from Athrai and her children were dying soon after birth.
Guru Gobind Singh said, 'On Amavas (during the day of the waning moon) or Ikadasi (day after Amavas) the two of you should come to Baoli Sahib in the early hours of the morning and take a bath, all your problems will be solved. The couple followed Guru Gobind Singh's instructions and were blessed with son.
In the evening, Guru Gobind Singh asked one of Sikhs, Bhai Diwan Chand to recite 'Rehras Sahib' and afterwards 'Ardas'. Then, Guru Gobind Singh rested. The following morning, Guru Gobind Singh arranged a diwan and recited 'Asa Di Vaar'. Guru Gobind Singh preached, gave blessings and Karah Parshad was distributed.
Then Bhai Jiwan Singh Ji reminded Guru Gobind Singh about the muslim Faqir named Dargahi Shah who had helped him during his journey from Delhi to Kiratpur Sahib in 1675 and said that he had been waiting to meet him. Guru Gobind Singh went to the home of Faqir Dargahi Shah (where now Gurdwara Sri Nabha Sahib is situated in Zirakpur) and...
