When you hear the word “hut” on a hiking trip, who else is picturing a lean-to shack in the woods? The hut to hut backpacking trip I took in the Italian Dolomites with @intothewild.adventure was one of the most insanely beautiful trips I’ve ever taken. Yes the hiking was hard at times, but the “huts” (called Rifugio’s) made it all worthwhile. Imagine hiking rough terrain in the middle of nowhere, through rain and wind and hail, and then all of the sudden a little cabin pops up on the side of a mountain. And they’re serving hot chocolate, beer, and homemade dumplings! Most are family run and have been so for generations. Pure perfection and one of my favorite things about the whole experience. Here’s my favorite Rifugio’s, all of which can be found on the Rosengarten trail in the Italian Dolomites: 6. Rifugio Paul Preuss- small Rifugio but in a gorgeous location. Hike in only. 5. Rifugio Paolina Hutte- medium sized Rifugio, with somewhat private rooms (sleeps 2 or 4). Run by the sweetest family, the Pichlers, and has a homey vibe. Amazing views AND you can reach it by ski lift, no hiking required. 4. Rifugio Vajolet- large Rifugio with large food selection and beautiful location. Rooms are very basic, our large group stayed in a 20+ person room with squat toilets, but I believe they have more private rooms available as well. Hike in only. 3. Rifugio Micheluzzi- medium sized Rifugio with nice, modern, hotel style rooms, but still has that homey vibe. Great drinks and food. Hike or drive in, this seemed like a popular day trip spot. 2. Rifugio Bergamo Grasleitenhutte: large Rifugio with basic rooms. We stayed in a large group room in the attic, think orphan Annie style with rows of beds nestled between attic rafters. There were smaller rooms available as well. The location of this one was insane, nestled between mountain peaks, the views were insane. Also family run with good, homemade food. Hike in only. 1. Rifugio Santnerpasshutte: brand new, medium sized Rifugio. Modern, state of the art amenities with gourmet food. Pair that with an insanely beautiful location, this Rifugio knocked our ducks off after a long day of hard hiking. Hike in only.

Great location, food, and private heated rooms with private bathroom. Not really a classic “rifugio”, more like a 3-stars hotel in a dreamlike valley. Very pet friendly, which we appreciated travelling with our dog. Hey, it’s not cheap either, but is fantastic for its location and it should be expected. It’s funny to see people complaining about prices. They clearly have never been in crazy overpriced swiss or french rifugios :) Hey carry the drinks and food yourself to the rifugio, then complain.

We couldn’t have picked a better place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was exciting from the start when we were picked up by Davide on the skidoo and taken to a winter wonderland! Our room was of a very high standard, super comfortable, perfectly decorated with a first class view of the beautiful Val Duron covered in snow. Our hosts Giulia and Davide were very accommodating and a pleasure to chat to. The multilingual staff was very friendly, helpful and professional. We enjoyed the meals included in our package and we would thoroughly recommend Rifugio Micheluzzi because we know you would not be...

We have stopped at this refugio four times over the years and every time the food has been fantastic. The yogurt, gelato or creme with berries has been very tasty. It is one of our favorite places to stop while on one of our favorite hikes in the area. The staff is very helpful. Eating outside in the back affords a tremendous view of the valley and...
