While the views at the top and along the way are beautiful, the trail itself is awful. The majority is barren terrain with overpriced, filthy toilet stops. Further, we started on the Subashiri trail (much lovelier with more greenery) but at NO POINT were we informed that descending via the Yoshida trail meant that we needed to pay an extra ¥2000 exit fee on top of the ¥1000 entry we paid at the start of the Subashiri trail. Upon exiting we were cheerfully frog-marched to the cashier by the gate attendants and forced to pay....

Make sure to bring yen. There are no ATMs and water along the trail is about ¥600 a bottle in some spots. Stamps for your walking stick can range from ¥300-¥500 and the restrooms ask for ¥200
