Takaragawa Onsen — Local services in Honshu

Another beautiful onsen Ryokan situated in the Gunma prefecture. Unlike the other places we stayed at, this one had a lot of foreign guests from different nationalities. I don't know the reason but it seems anyway that this place is very popular with foreign tourists.

The facility is elegant and clean, situated deep inside the mountain, surrounded by beautiful trees. The room we were given was a Japanese style accommodation. It was spacious, clear with a very nice view over the river. The room is provided with the regular amenities: towels, yukata , tea, Japanese sweets etc.

Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and the amount was sufficient. Real coffee (not instant coffee) is provided for breakfast. But no pastries: it's a typical Japanese meal.

Outside pools are the highlight of this onsen Ryokan: situated at the foot of the river and surrounded by trees, it's a perfect magical environment to relax. Especially during the koyo season when foliage turns red and yellow. It's a unique experience. The Japanese style garden is stunning. Since it is also open to the public during the daytime, it might get crowded. Early in the morning and in the evening are the best moments to enjoy your bath.

Now, there's a point we really need to talk about : the problem of aging facilities. This is a very common problem within the onsen Ryokan industry: a lot of facilities were built or renovated in the 80s or 90s during the economic boom. They tried to minimize the cost by using cheap material. Many owners privileged profits over durability and sustainability. Since the 2000, a lot of onsen Ryokan have bankrupted, and others are fighting bankruptcy because of the costs of renovation. It's almost as expensive as tearing down the whole facility and building a new one. In our room, I've noticed holes in the flooring. Holes they tried to hide with a carpet and tatami mats. When I checked, the flooring underneath was rotting badly and could literally stick my finger inside...(See the picture). And I'm pretty sure a lot of other rooms have a similar problem.

In summary, it's a great facility, the location is premium and the outdoor pool outstanding. But someone, someday, we will have to take the renovation (and security)...

Baths are shared with other nearby hotels. There are three outdoor ones that are mixed gender, one exclusively for women. Also one indoor bath for men and one for women. The first mixed gender bath has hot and cold spots, depending on where you are. The second mixed gender bath is generally the hottest. The third mixed gender bath is lukewarm.

The outdoor baths are full of skin pieces, possibly from guests who are too lazy to shower first. The view from each is great though. Dinner and breakfast is full of odd flavors if you are a westerner. The only issue I had was the staff who randomly knocked on our door at night to set up the futons. They criticized where we stored our stuff in our room and us for not wearing our masks in our own...

〜奥山の混浴秘湯〜 宝川温泉 汪泉閣：宿泊利用 宝側温泉 宝川山荘：日帰り利用 宝川温泉にはgoogle上に二つのスポットが登録されているが、上記のように棲み分けがなされている。

爆弾低気圧が迫り、上越線の水上以北は終日運休。 しかし、日本海側の荒天は何処吹く風。晴天に恵まれた水上駅から今回の目的地、宝川温泉を目指す。 水上駅からは日に数本の湯の小屋温泉行きのバスに乗車、30分ほどで最寄りの宝川入口バス停に到着。Suicaが使えるのがありがたい。 バス停からさらに20分ほど県道を進み、ようやく宝川温泉に到着した。

※尚、宿泊の場合は送迎がある模様。

日帰りの場合は入口から坂を下った宝川山荘にて受付を済ませ、利用することになる。 コロナ渦のため、利用は2時間まで、食堂は休業であった。 料金は大人1,500円と地方の日帰り利用の温泉としてはお高め。 立地、混浴、大露天風呂、湯浴み着込みなどの特徴を考えれば「まあ妥当かな」と思える値段設定。

源泉掛け流しの大露天風呂という特性上、湯温がどうしても低くなってしまう。特に雪見風呂となる冬季はそれが顕著だ。 目玉の大露天風呂へ逸る気持ちを抑えて、まずは内風呂でゆっくり身体を温めたい。

内風呂も、もちろん源泉掛け流し。 浴槽のふちからお湯がどばどば溢れ出る様を見て心踊る。 数カ所ある洗い場はシャンプ・ボディーソープ完備だが、温泉のどばどばとは対照的に、シャワーはちょろちょろなので注意。 内風呂で身体を十分に温めたら、いよいよ大露天風呂へ！ 内風呂から大露天風呂間は、一度衣類を着て移動となる。

大露天風呂は全部で4種類 ・摩訶の湯：120畳 内風呂の建物から坂を下っていると、真っ先に見える露天風呂。確かに広い！内風呂からの道のりから前振り無しに入浴している人が視線に入るので、最初はドキッとしてしまうかもしれない。 脱衣所から一番離れた箇所に源泉があるので、手前側は寒い。冬季は奥まで進み温まろう。最奥は一段階上がっている。打たせ湯もあるが、冬季は休止。 ・般若の湯：50畳 摩訶の湯の脱衣所を挟んで反対側にある湯船。 来訪時は清掃中。湯船が浅いらしい。 ・摩耶の湯：100畳 女性専用のため、未訪問。 ・子宝の湯：200畳 上記3つの湯船とは異なり、川の対岸にある。 冬季は吊り橋が凍りつき、裸足で向かうと苦行に久しい体験ができる。大自然の中を湯浴み着のまま向かうのは非日常感たっぷりで楽しい。 子宝の湯の湯船は、広さが故に湯温が下がりやすく、木枠で仕切られた限られたスペース以外は、ほぼ水のよう。 湯船上の上家には子宝の湯らしく神社が鎮守する。

利用の上でいくつか注意点をあげる。 1、大自然の中にある湯船なので、葉っぱ・虫・湯の花などが湯船に浮遊している。 2、源泉掛け流し（加温なし、循環なし）なので、特に冬季は湯船の温度低下が目立つ。 湧き出し口近くに湯船の中を木枠で囲ったスペースがあり、大露天風呂と謳っても実質的に限られた範囲しか入れない。 3、風呂間の移動が大変。 内風呂から大露天風呂へは着衣が必要。 冬季は降り積もる雪や凍てつく歩道を素足で歩く。

もちろん、この場所や源泉掛け流しの大露天風呂という特徴を考えたら、どれも至極当然のことである。 以上の注意点が気になるようなら、湯沸かし器で沸かした快適な自宅のお風呂をお勧めしたい。
