Okaeri Village is part of Moku Moku Farm, which is an educational farm near Iga in Mie prefecture. The farm consists of some food shops, restaurants, cafes, animals, animal shows, and food-related workshops (we joined a fun bread making class). You can be a day visitor to the farm and it's a lot of fun especially for children, but you can also stay in th 38 cottages they have in their grounds, as we did. ||||The cottages are very eco-friendly and comfortable - we stayed in one with 3 large beds and 2 futons in the gallery upstairs. They have a fridge and a bathroom inside (no kitchens, but there is a restaurant in the farm which stays open for dinner). As part of the accommodation, they offer early morning farm activities for kids - we gathered together at 6.30am, went for a short drive to their nearby cow farm and helped feed and milk the cows (activities differ every day). Then they took us back for an amazing breakfast buffet. At 26000 yen for the night for 2 kids and 2 parents, it wasn't the cheapest accommodation but super fun and all the food in all the cafes and restaurants in the farm was just outstanding, as you would expect in a country which is so focused on food. There is also an indoor & outdoor hot spring bath (you pay extra for that, but staying guests get a half price discount) which is very atmospheric in the night. ||||It's very popular especially in school holiday seasons and weekends, but when we visited, there were only 3 families staying. You can book from their website 5 months in advance. ||||It's in the middle of nowhere so if you don't have a car, you'd have to get taxi from the nearly JR station of Tsuge (taxi costs about 3500 yen). The staff speak very limited English but...
Read moreWe stayed two nights in the kids cottage. There was a very wide bed (probably close to 3m) that sleeps 4 comfotably. In addition there were two sets of futons up at the loft.||Even though we visited in winter, the room, including the loft area, was sufficiently warm -- we were pleasantly surprised that floor was heated. ||||Breakfast was scrumptious but we had to walked to the restaurants inside moku moku farm via a steep hill. The venue for breakfast was different over the two days of our stay, so if you are travelling with small children, need a bit of planning in terms of logistics and site recce. ||||A slight disappointment that my kids could not participate in the farm experience because we were foreigners -- there were some concerns about cross-border health issues for their dairy animals. ||||Friendly and excellent staff. I had to change my bookings serveral times due scheduling problems but they were most accomodating. Very helpful throughout our stay too. || ||Not the most convenient place to stay. Nearest convenient store is about 4-5 km drive away. But overall, my kids had fun and food was very good. My son still fondly remember this place with the...
