I first went to Cetacea to play board games with my family and had a great time. The staff members are very knowledgeable about the games and if you have a certain type of game you’d like to play, they can suggest games to you based on your preferences. They are then able to explain the rules to you clearly.

I am not a native speaker of Japanese and they are able to both recommended games suitable to me and then explain them simply and patiently without making me feel like a burden. They are all kind, polite, and emotionally mature.

Some shops of this sort have a sort of cliquish, unwelcoming atmosphere. If you are gamer or hobbyist, you can enjoy a store with a grungy vibe, but you might not want to take a first date or a parent there! Cetacea, however, is clean and not overwhelming. It is equally comfortable and approachable to veteran gamers and “civilians” or newbies.

I’m not a native speaker of Japanese but my son is. I wanted to introduce him to the trading card game Magic: The Gathering which I had played when I was younger but I needed support in teaching him to play the game in Japanese as well as with the ways the game had changed since I was a player.

The staff helped me to introduce him to the game, and he really took to it. Since then he has become a regular player. Even though he is younger than most of the other players, he is treated like a respected equal. Furthermore, I feel secure letting him go there alone because the staff are responsible and trustworthy.

My husband and I were on holidays and we were looking for a fun activity to do. We both like board games but really are beginners level. We went to the shop and were really impressed by the amount of board games at disposition. We spotted a few that we had always wanted to try, and way more that we now want to discover. An experienced player joined us to play 2 games. He explained the rules to us really kindly and in a very easily understandable way. We had a lot of fun. We stayed there for 6 or 7 hours, time flew.
