Um belo templo budista no meio das montanhas na região de Mashiko. A pagoda fica junto à um templo muito bonito e interessante, há várias construções antigas e também há trilhas para quem gosta de caminhar nas montanhas…. 天文十二年(1534年)に高舘城主の益子家宗の建立です、三重塔の初層は和様・二層は折衷様・三層は唐様の三様式を採用していて、三間三層造り目板打の板屋根銅板葺き総高約十七・九メートルの塔で国の重要文化財に指定されています。 建築の手法は優美でそれぞれの建築様式(三様式)の特徴をよく表している、屋根は軒の出が深く勾配や反りも強いが均衡調和のとれた安定したものである。 相輪の材質は青銅製で九輪の水煙が雲形の連続模様で、伏鉢に「天文七歳...

西明寺は真言宗のお寺です。本尊は十一面観世音菩薩、開基は行基菩薩で創立は天平九年（737）です。 山号は獨鈷山です。 天平年間（729年～749年）行基の開山、紀有麻呂の開基によって創建されたと伝えられています。その後、兵火などによりたびたび焼失しましたが、宇都宮氏・益子氏の援助によりそのつど再建されました。江戸時代には江戸幕府から朱印状が与えられています。 鎌倉時代から戦国時代にかけて活躍た益子氏は、『土佐日記』で名高い紀貫之（きのつらゆき）の後裔（こうえい）となる紀一族が益子に移り住み、益子氏を名乗ったのが始まりといい、西明寺本堂にも紀貫之が祀られています。 三重塔は、室町時代、天文12年（1543年）、高館城主・益子家宗（ましこいえむね）が建立したものです。初層は和様、二層は折衷様、三層は唐様の三様式を要する三間三層造りで板屋根銅板葺きです。高さは17.932mあります。国の重要文化財に指定されています。関東以北で最も古い塔のひとつです。
