I went here during the off-season at the end of September. It was quiet and beautiful. No sounds of traffic, only the ocean, the wind, and the birds.
Many things were closed because it wasn't the season for tourists, so I was unable to visit the Missing Post Office or the museums. (These are only open on Saturday, but I went on a Friday) There was still a lot to see, though. I took a walk through the town and enjoyed seeing homes, gardens, wildlife and cats. On the way back to the ferry I stopped at the general store and bought an ice cream. Seats in the shade are provided outside, and it was nice to relax with a cold treat.
Overall, visiting Awashima made me feel at ease immediately. There's something melancholy about the silence and the derelict buildings, but that's part of why this island had taken root in my heart. I'm in love with every inch...
