Stayed at ryokan sansui for 2 nights which was lovely! It is not exactly easy to get here, but worth it!! Easiest way is probably a bus from matsumoto or takayama to hirayu onsen and then switch to another bus. There are two bus stops near the ryokan that the bus will stop at, one (fukuji-onsen) is very close like 2 minute walk away. Another one is fukuji-onsen-guchi which is a 15 min walk up a hill which is likely not ideal if you have baggage. If you call the hotel they’ll come pick you up! Or drop you off on the way home. The place is family run. Spacious Japanese style rooms with futon/tatami, attached bathroom. The interior is just a little dated but it adds charm! Everyone is just so nice. They gave me lots of Recs for things to do and gave me helpful pamphlets and maps to get around. I got the package with breakfast and dinner, so much food!! It was all very good. FYI this is Japanese style— you don’t get to pick what you get it’s just tons of dishes set in front of you. You picked a set time for breakfast and dinner (7/730/8 for breakfast and 6/630 for dinner). The onsen were very nice, an inside and outside bath each for both sexes (separated) and then 4ish private outside baths that you don’t have to pay to use or reserve in advanced, you just see if the doors open and go in if so. So nice, you have to pay for these private baths at a lot of other places. I speak Japanese so I don’t know exactly how much English they speak but they seem like they certainly would do their best and or use google translate if needed. They do have maps/hotel information etc in English. They only take cash and there are very few ATMs (none that are walkable, one at the post office in tochio that is closed Sunday and only open in the morning on Monday and you would have to bus to and from.) make sure you get enough cash for the Stay and bus tickets etc before you get there. the busses do not run too frequently (once an hour) so make sure you look up the times before you plan your day. Wifi only really worked near the lobby. Definitely recommend for access to kamikochi and...
Read moreIt was stated after 8pm we could not check in - We arrived to Sansui around 7:30pm and were terrified no one would be there to attend us. The opposite. Upon our arrival they greeted us with big smiles on their faces, took our luggage up to the room, and even offered us green tea before heading to bed. The staff here are some of the most precious we have come across on our trip. This place is not the most modern but you feel very homey and welcomed. We found everything to be clean, only thing is you have to remember it’s in the middle of the mountains so there are bugs around. The outside public hot spring was marvelous!!!! For our fortune we came on August 6th and 7th and there happened to be a dragon festival happening right around the corner. The man who greeted us upon arrival was also at the festival and helped us get drinks to be put on our room tab because we went with out cash. Breakfast is included, a little different from American breakfast but it adds to the experience. We asked for dinner our second night, everything was so beautiful and the food just kept coming, if you are not accustomed to authentic Japanese cuisine I don’t quite recommend the dinner… it is a lovely experience if you want to try something new and different. We are absolutely amazed with the service and look forward to coming back with more family! I recommend Ryokan...
Read morewe stayed with 9 persons at ryokan sansui and the host is very warm and welcomed us like family. The only barrier was the language, as we were communicating via Google translate, which caused some frustration: as non-smokers we were given a room where the previous guests had smoked. When we asked to change the room, they switched our room with the one of my mother in law, who is also a non-smoker. After discussing for 30 minutes, they finally gave another room, but the room was not warm yet, I guess that is the reason why it took so long before another room was given. At the end that was no issue, as dinner was served.||A lot of effort has been put in diner and breakfast, with our asian roots that was for us no issue, it was very good. For people who not used to eat rice for breakfast, this may be something to take into account.||Bathing is separate for both sexes, and you can also go outside. It was very relaxing, warm, we enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Sansui.||In April there was still snow in the mountains, we even saw monkeys in the trees.||||Takayama is really recommended to visit, as it is completely different from Osaka or other japanese cities. The only thing is that it takes 6 hours with the bus or 5 hours with train...
