塚原温泉の手前から登り、頂上までは1時間かからないくらいです。8合目あたりまでは重機が通れる砂利道なので登りやすく、頂上からは西に塚原高原、東に別府湾と別府市街地を見渡せます。特に鶴見岳、由布岳を間近で一望出来るのが嬉しいですね。気軽に登れて海と山が見晴らせて、温泉にも入れるお勧めの山です。+20分ほどで西峰まで行けます。こちらまで行くと塚原高原がさらに見晴らせます。途中で伽藍の槍、伽藍の窓と言ったお楽しみスポットがあり、火山ガスの吹き出る火口を上から遠望できます。登山道の途中にある火口見学は有料なので登山道から近寄ってはいけません、見たい人は塚原温泉を経由してください。途中の荒涼とした岩場は戦隊物が怪人と戦っていそうです。また鎮西八郎こと源為朝が一刀両断したという岩もあります。
