For hundreds of years, monks escaping persecution found refuge in the deep gorges of North Lebanon. As early as the 4th century, they started building monasteries into solid rock. The origins of the monastery of St Elisha are disputed because they date back to several eras. The current outer building is from the 19th century, but there are elements inside the monastery that date back to the 1100s. The natural setting is stunning. Situated closer to the bottom of the gorge, the monastery offers stunning views of the valley surrounding it. You can also go for hikes. Just ask someone at the monastery. They'll be happy to help.

There are two Mar Lishaa monasteries. The one that google brings you to is the new one that houses the current monks and the old one is down the valley. Although not shown in google maps, they paved a road that will lead you right into the older monastery (no longer difficult to get there but road is still narrow), just follow the road in the valley it will lead you straight into it.

Either if you go there in winter or summer, in spring or autumn, you will always fall in love with this special place and you will ask to go there again and again! I have been there more than 15 times! The valley was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. Hiking between the olive trees, visiting some very old monasteries, spending some time deep in the nature, listening to the birds, to the water stream, smelling the flowers, following the butterflies....the place is heaven on earth. Just don't go there on any official Holiday (especially the 1st of May!)...the place will be full of very...
