The Blue Horizon III was by far the worst and most unsafe liveaboard Iāve been on.
There are often small issues on board but itās how the boat recovers that makes it better. This was nonexistent onboard the Blue Horizon 3.
We did two weeks aboard from the Deep South back to Male. This trip required Blue Horizon to book a domestic flight from MLE to GKK. Months prior, before booking, I was communicating with Blue Horizon management regarding the domestic flight time. I, and others on the boat, were told that it was a 1200 flight. I booked my flight inbound to MLE the previous day. Two days prior to the flight we were told that it was now at 1655. The 1200 flight still ran, and so did a 1420 flight. I could have saved a night in a hotel had they kept us updated. The boatās excuse was āthings changeā, but the airlineās ticketing agents said the booking wasnāt made until the day of departure.
Nitrox is pretty much a requirement in the Maldives. Multiple dives a day to 30m/100ft where you stay at the same depth as youāre hooked in. Not on this boat. Upon arrival at the airport and being picked up by the Dhoni as we were setting up, an inquiry was made and the dive guides told one person. The rest of the boat found out at dinner from the other guests. Throughout the two weeks we were forced to end dives early due to our NDL. The guides would also consistently pick shallow giriās. When it was brought up to boat management, they said they didnāt know the nitrox system had been broken for weeks.
We also spent five days next to the island the captain was from doing the same sub-par dives. There is not a shortage of dive sites in the Maldives, why would we spend 5 days there? I know one day was to stay late for rental gear and attempt to fix some of the air conditioning units, which were constantly breaking.
The second week, a few divers had to rent gear, the gear they had pre-booked wasnāt actually onboard so we had to wait another day for this gear. And two check dives had to be made because half the boat missed the first one due to not having equipment.
The gear they did have onboard was unsafe. Want to have a BC inflate without your knowledge? Look no further than this boat.
There is no leadership on the boat. They have a ācruise directorā, Zinah that does nothing. There was no weekly or daily plan shared with the group. The plan for the day was found out by asking the crew and word of mouth of the guests to spread it around. Multiple times he said āI just donāt care anymore.ā That attitude is about a toxic as a urinal cake in Chernobyl. He didnāt even know what was on the itinerary for both weeks.
Both his and the guides briefings covered the site, but planned the dive for Nitrox, when the boat hadnāt had nitrox for multiple weeks.
This boat is unsafe, there is no regard to industry standard safety practices. For example, while fueling, next to the open fuel tank, the dive guides decided it would be the perfect time to light a cigarette. The captain walked past them while this was going on and did nothing.
The boat is in disrepair with the jacuzzi, dhoni steps, room air conditioning, etc. broken. Most of the sun chairs are broken and many that are usuable have exposed nails so youāll be cut. Their constant excuse was the boat hadnāt been in Male for a couple months. The boat is filled with termites and cockroaches; they say that the boat is treated monthly. Many times the inside of the main deck would smell like smoke. The dive guides would smoke before and after the dive, filling the dhoni with smoke.
The lack of leadership from boat management provides no pressure for the dive guides and staff to improve. At the end of the two weeks a member of management, Ameer, visited the boat to hear our complaints. At the time he offered no resolution. After a couple weeks going back and forth with my agent, they offered a refund of $150USD. Lots of time and money was wasted due to their inability to manage and run...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis trip was a birthday present, with both my birthday and our wedding anniversary falling during the trip, and my husband and I were really looking forward to it.
All crew are friendly and helpful, and the chef does a fantastic job, making sure that everyone has plenty of food, no matter what the dietary requirements were.
Unfortunately we were quite ill during the trip due to a blockage in the exhaust outlet resulting in fumes from the generators in the engine room entering directly into our bathroom (and cabin) for at least 2 days, until we identified the issue and the crew were able to fix the problem. The crew onboard admitted this should never happen (and it had nothing to do with the dive dhoni, as the owners tried to shift the blame to later)
The effects of breathing the fumes (CARBON MONOXIDE) resulted in us both feeling unwell for most of the trip and affected our trip significantly, with us missing many dives, as it exacerbated our symptoms (vomitting and severe headaches mainly)
As advised whilst onboard, upon return I contacted the central office of Blue Horizon to advise of the experience we had, and recommended that to prevent the fume issues occurring again, a Carbon Monoxide detector should be the installed, at least in the cabin we used (and a pulse oximeter, so that need for oxygen could be assessed) The company just tried to negate our experience, telling us no-one else had ever had a problem, and did not even apologise. They reported that they took pride in their safety standards, but the equipment was not mandatory.
The crew work hard, with very limited time between trips (only a few hours), so it is little wonder that routine maintenance and checks suffer. They are constantly trying to manage failing equipment eg the air con was down on the lower deck cabins for the first day or so, the dive dhoni regularly had issues throughout the week. The boat needs more investment and more downtime.
In terms of the diving we did manage to do, we were pleased to see the number of sharks present. This was our 10th trip to the Maldives, and our 4th in the Southern atolls, and it is nice to see the numbers do seem to be increasing again. I saw a Tiger shark on my very first trip to the Maldives 31 yrs ago, and it was nice to see them once again, albeit in a more contrived way this time.
Some of the diving needs better planning; the guides often did not read the currents well, meaning divers were dropped in the water in the wrong positions, and despite in theory the 24 divers being split into 4 groups, in practice this often did not work and the groups merged into one. It would also be good if the different dive safari boats communicated with each other, and co-ordinated their itineraries to avoid the massive number of divers on some sites.
In general, I'm not sorry we did the trip, but would not want...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHad an amazing experience diving with them. The boat is good and the crew is extremely attentive and helpful. Especially Ranga and Suresh. Dives were very good. Got to see beautiful stuff underwater. Celebrated my birthday and my 100th dive with them and they went well and beyond to make it a memorable experience for me. Their dive instructor Yuri is amazing and such a brilliant guy under water. Felt absolutely safe to dive with him because he's so attentive to the divers diving with him and is with them at all costs. My own personal mask broke and I had a mask fiasco and Yuri fixed that for me as well. He s the fixer and has such vast knowledge about diving and the dive sites which ofcourse comes with his years of experience. Mohai and Toto as dive guides were brilliant and sweethearts to dive with and hang out and chill with. Mohai has an exceptional knowledge about underwater life and he so happily shares it with everyone . He is also extremely safe to dive with and I was so happy with the way he would speak to everyone and make sure everyone is at ease while diving and on the boat as well. I was not happy with my dive guide Ayyah, as I found unsafe to be around him underwater as he wasn't attentive to me when I had a mask fiasco underwater and was only interested in going fast, he isn't really the person you want to be talking to or diving with because according to me he doesn't really speak well to women and acts too pricey and rude. Not sure if this guy should be working on this boat. Definitely not a team player -wouldn't recommend to dive with him. Yuri,Toto and Mohai are brilliant to dive with and I highly recommend being in their groups. Other than Ayyah, i have no complaints about anyone or anything. The food was delicious and they crew did their best to accomodate my diet needs. I had the best trip ever and the best birthday ever, all thanks to Blue Horizon. The Dive Dhoni is well equipped and the staff on boat is also extremely helpful. I would definitely come back for another dive trip with them because of their fabulous service and safety standards. Thankyou guys for making it such a brilliant...
