One of the very few accessible beaches on the South West coast of Malta. Its crystal clear clean water is so inviting for a quick dip. The seabed is rich in marine life with various types of seaweed and lots of rocky hiding places for fish and crabs. Ghar Lapsi is also a mecca for novice and professional divers who flock to the area to explore crevices and underwater caves. - Visited this bay today for an early morning swim of around 2 hours.
I headed towards the East visiting every nook and cranny in the shallow waters leading to deeper areas covered in Posidonia and patches of white sand.
The water was theming with little fish particularly damsel fish that gleamed a radiant blue. There were shoals of mullet, saddled bream and the one off needle fish. I came across several species of wrasse and combers. Spider crabs are once again in abundance and there are early signs of the recovery of sea urchins. Limppets clung to the rocks as they were gently washed by the water and several species of seashells inhabited the diverse habitat.
The recently fallen boulders that made the seabed their new home in Ghereq Mizun are already gradually being colonised by seaweed.
As I approached Ghar Manwel I could see the water glistening from and underground fresh water stream that also made the area so much cooler than the surrounding sea.
There are a couple of dark caves where rosellas inhabit and the rocks are covered in pink and red algae and coral. These are then adorned by beautiful anemone including the conspicuous orange flower like ones.
Swimming back against the current was not so difficult but it consumed some of my remaining energy.
The sea was rather absent from jelly fish. I only came across one red veined transparent one that resembled a cup and that had no tentacle.
Certainly it was a very nice way how to spend a couple of hours of a Sunday morning. Next time round I will head West towards Qawsalla and Ilsna that also offers an...
