If you're in Puerto Vallarta and would like to see some ancient ruins but are concerned about safety on the roads I can assure you traveling to this location during daylight hours is pretty safe. When you have the chance to take toll roads... take them. Cellular service will be limited at times but you shouldn't have a problem arriving at your location.We did a day trip or actually I should say overnight trip out of Puerto Vallarta and went to a 1600 century Spanish casa near the Great Guachi and stayed the night. It was a beautiful drive passing through Punta mita, Salulita, and San Pancho. Along the way we stopped at the ancient ruins of Alta Vista. An absolute must see! Slowly winding up the river gorge the petroglyphs reveal the need for human sacrifice and ultimately lead up to where the beheadings took place and the unbelievably serene and powerful location. Here the decapitated head was ceremoniously presented to the gods. If you're interested, Google it and I am doing a review where I will provide more details. In the morning weed left the closet about 9:30 a.m. arriving to the great guachi for its opening at 10:00. To our pleasant surprise it was free on the weekend and... There was nobody there! We literally walked to these amazing ancient ruins and this incredible pyramid. It is very cool. They have a beautiful museum with great facilities and I recommend before visiting the ruins sitting down and watching the video in the theater. Very informative. Get there just as soon as it opens because you will have to walk up to the pyramid and it is best to do it before the sun starts cooking the ground! You will want to get up the hill and check out the pyramids before it gets too hot. On our way down some of the folks were struggling up the hill as the noon day sun began pounding down upon them.
