Perfect Homestay Gem in Nepal’s Best Kept Secret

On arrival in Nepalgunj airport some three hours late the Homestay driver awaited us in the baggage area where we would begin our adventure with a two-hour drive to the Homestay!

(Note: Airlines in Nepal are often two, three or more hours behind schedule)

Budhi and Sonja awaited our arrival and showed us to the Sunset cottage consisting of clean, spacious albeit basic accommodations. We would sleep like babies on the most comfortable mattress we experienced in three months of travel throughout Asia! Our room included a heating and A/C combo unit for added comfort. (We would use the heat on a couple of coolish nights)

The comfortable accommodations are an added bonus and the real value is the hosts Budhi and Sonja, along with their staffs who always made us feel like family with home cooked meals, evenings spent after a long day in the bush sitting around the fire pit, coupled with the most amazing guide and driver completing what can only be described as a wondrous and memorable adventure, that we only wish we could have enjoyed longer!

Krishna our guide and Jayram our driver who is also a licensed guide combined to tailor four days of Safari in the most professional and expert manner using their knowledge, years of experience and patience to site tigers, Rhino’s, Leopards, Elephants, Owls, hawks and other wildlife that along with their stories and personable attributes not only wowed us but make them a credit to their profession!

After a long hot day in the bush, a cold beer awaited us in the patio gardens or around the firepit, followed by some tasty home cooked Nepali food fare.

Evenings can be spent relaxing or regaling the days adventures with fellow guests and the hosts. Budhi always has a story or two to tell while making everyone feel like one of the family.

Sonja was excellent from first contact to arrival and departure helping us plan and prepare, co-ordinating activities and transportation.

Bardia Homestay is a rare and unique opportunity to connect with local Nepalese and wildlife offering phenomenal value and great hosts!

Thank You everyone for an absolutely phenomenal stay – You...

We stayed at Bardia Homestay for 4 days and five nights in early May 2024, and had an amazing and really memorable time.|We felt totally at home and really well looked after while still able to "do our own thing".|Originally were were due to stay for a day longer, but unfortunately our flight into Nepalgunj was cancelled due to an aiport closure at Pokhara airport, which caused us some worry, but Sonja was super helpful in suggesting alternatives to travel, including an alternative overnight stay in what ended up being a 2 day car journey- which we actually ended up enjoying thanks to Sonja's suggestion.|In Bardia we were able to do everything we wanted to do, with one full day and one half day jeep safari, a full day walking safari and a morning bird walk- all planned and discussed with lots of help and suggestions from Sonja and the staff, which we really appreciated. Manmohan was our guide on all of these and was really friendly, knowledgeable and patient with our endless stops for photos, questions about birds and the forest, and general rest stops. We felt really well looked after by him and Jayram the driver. Our first and full day jeep safari day turned into one of our most memorable travel experiences with several tiger sightings, one very close up indeed! We are sure that the guides' skill, knowledge and patience (with both wildlife and us hapless tourists!) had a lot to do with this.||We wished we would have had more time in Bardia, even if just to relax at the farm or to wander around the village, which we loved and felt super relaxed and safe; the room and communal areas at the homestay were great and felt very cosy. We particularly enjoyed the amazing food and ended up looking forward to mealtimes with lots of things to choose from from the menu.||Thank you so much to Sonja, Budhi and all the staff at Bardia Homestay- we will always remember and very much hope to come back some day (although next time perhaps not in...

We had great stayed in Bardia homestay for a week, Sonja and Budhi were great hosts, we loved them so much. In the beginning, we chose bardia homestay because of their website was very helpful with full of informations, which means they did’t hide any thing from the visitors who might not stay with them, that made I believed the owner was honest and generous person. Indeed, THEY WERE! We had learned how to make acar from Budhi, how to make chapati from chef ( sorry I forgot his name).Sonja was always there to give us surprises, she showed us a lady who made some grass knitting, She and Budhi helped us to buy some clay horses and rhinos. All of those extra work weren’t their duty, they did them for us just because we made a curious ask. We really appreciated.

Beside that, we were so lucky to see all the highlights of Bardia, tiger, Rhino, wild elephant, jackal and even a glance of a leopard, big thanks to our guide, that was fantastic! The homestay self was very cute too. our rooms were next to wheat field, there was a beautiful sun rise from anther side of green sea every morning, a light fog lied on the top of field like white waves :) We had spent one month in Nepal, Bardia was the nicest region of all Nepal for us, it was because of the nature and culture, and also The Bardia Homestay.

An authentic experience amongst nature with wonderful hosts. I stayed here for three nights in June. Om and Lalita were wonderful hosts, introducing me to Tharu cuisine and (Om) guiding me through the community forest. Om also dropped me at the bus stop the morning I left. On my last night, there was a dust storm and they swept the dust off my bed and shut the windows. I really enjoyed the peace, nature and animals (chickens, ducks and goats). I only saw deer and peacocks in the forest but still enjoyed the walks and scenery. The hut was simple but clean and comfortable. I was worried about not having air conditioning at night (western comforts), but there was a fan and the straw and concrete provided sufficient insulation - I was very warm but able to sleep. It might be hard for the driver to find your homestay as they are all numbered on an unnamed road. It's very bumpy on a tuk tuk too (there weren't any taxis in sight at the bus stop), but it's all part of the adventure! I came from Lumbini and it took ten hours (two buses and a tuk tuk), but I knew I'd be fine as Nepalese people are so kind and helpful. Not once did I have to ask for help.
