The Klompenwaard is a nature reserve in the floodplains of the Gelderland town of Doornenburg (which has a very nice castle), in the municipality of Lingewaard. De Klompenwaard is part of the Natura 2000 area Gelderse Poort.
The area lies southwest of the built-up area of Doornenburg. The area has relatively many types of landscape, including grassland, ruggedness, river beach and willow floodplain forest. The Klompenwaard is managed by the Forestry Commission. After the high waters of 1993 and 1995, the Klompenwaard changed rapidly from an agricultural area into a beautiful nature reserve. Nature development went very fast here, because large quantities of clay were quickly needed to reinforce dikes after the extreme high waters.
In the Klompenwaard, this clay was excavated in the late 1990s in the form of a side channel. The water in the gully flowed only at high tide until 2016. Since November 2016, an inlet has been created so that the side channel now always flows (except for extremely low tides). Many birds and even beavers live along the side channel.
River wood has been in the side channel since 2016. Dead trees enrich life under the water surface.
The landscape consists of flowering shrublands, willow groves and small beaches. The whole area is grazed throughout the year by a herd of red giants and konik horses.
The strategically important Klompenwaard is also home to Fort Pannerden. The fort has been restored and is now open to the public. From the roof, the view over the Gelderse Poort is magnificent. You can also see Doornenburg Castle, which is close by, from the roof.
The entire Klompenwaard is freely accessible to the public, including off roads and paths. During a walk to the junction point, across the river beaches or along the side channel, you will see hundreds of different species of plants, perhaps spot a beaver or a kingfisher. From the Klompenwaard, a foot ferry sails to the Millingerwaard in summer. At the tip of the Klompenwaard, the Rhine splits into the Waal and the Pannerdens Kanaal (river again from Angerden; the Lower Rhine). At the junction point, you can spend hours watching the river...
