Windross Farm Golf Course

A little off the beaten track and down some farm lanes, arriving at the entrance, you do feel like you are entering a farm. The driveway leads you to the really well appointed clubhouse and some great facilities, which includes a driving range, chipping and putting green, all available before you start. The welcome from Martin in the pro shop was not only welcoming, but also very accommodating. Now I’m not sure this is on the menu for everyone, but when we found out that the restaurant was not open and we could not get our early morning caffeine fix, Martin offered to go into the kitchen and make it for us! Outstanding. This is a course that is visually appealing; utilising natural flora to contour the tee boxes, fairways, greens and streams, and what feels like farm roads instead of concrete cart paths, this is a course with no boring holes. The first nine pulls you in, giving you all the opportunity to score well and then the second nine ramps up the ante, with 15 to 18 being 4 tough closing holes. The fairways are in good shape and produce really good roll, with offline shots ending in the suitably tough semi rough. Whilst the tussoc rough is really challenging, and fairway bunkers well placed and in play, the course provides many bale out areas. The par 4’s offer great challenge and reward options for long hitters, and for those choosing a shorter, and dare I say it, a more strategic approach, they are not punished by excessively long shots into the green. The closely mown greens are well sized and have good contours, leaving approach shots needing to be thought about, as shots that go long over the green are severely punished in tough green side rough. I think that once you have experience a few rounds here, it would help a lot with shot placement, as the greens are really hard, not providing bite you would normally expect. Don’t let this put you off, as I am probably a little critical, given some of my poor shot choices into the greens today!!! The greens are running fast and true; you couldn’t want more. They’re great and a couple of those long putts through the breaks can leave you a little nervous; however, hitting the right line at the right pace provides wonderful returns. Even though we used carts today, this is an easy walking course with little to no elevation. I was a little surprised that the restaurant and bar were not open today. Whilst I understand the need for rest days for the team, I wonder if January holidays are the exception, as the course was busy. All in all, a course I look forward to playing again, in fact, want to play again soon. Put Windross Farm on your list, you will not be disappointed.

Booked a round on 12th of May and checked website about coring of course and found no information or dates the day of play I turned up to pro shop and was not informed the greens and some fairways had been cored 2 weeks earlier, I was only informed by some members upon the first hole.

The members proceeded to ask how much I paid and I told them and that I also was not informed of the coring nor was there information on the course website and the members were absolutely disgusted that I was charged so much for how poor quality the greens and some fairways were considering it was 2 weeks on since the coring.

I proceeded to email the course asking about the situation and how they provided limited information but still charged a $135 for greens that were pointless to putt on to which I received a email telling me the General manager was away and would respond to my email in regards to what I had raised in the email it has now been two weeks since I was told he was back at work and received no response.

Lastly the members I played with were incredible but as for a simple follow up response from a highly praised GM on their website I think is quite poor considering Windross is supposed to be a top contending...

Our Jaguar Car Club members visited for lunch , the tables were reserved and set for up to 30 covers , the friendly hospitality was complimented with a delicious menu selection from vege stacks, prime tender beef burgers with truffle aoli served with crispy fries, generous wedges loaded with sour cream, salmon and poached eggs etc . All cooked and joyfully presented with perfection by the jovial chef and accompanied with expertly textured coffees by the charming barista , and both were voted to have the warmest of personalities . The 180 degree views from the huge landscape windows of all things golf to admire from comfortable seating, a spotlessly clean environment inside and out . Most importantly a well designed landscaped carpark just invites you to call again...

Golf Course has transformed massively from when I previously played the golf course 5 years ago, an entirely new team of greenkeepers, staff and management. The greens in the middle of winter are as good as most of NZ in the summer rolling true and plenty of speed, some big projects have changed the way the course is played and one of the few golf courses to have golf carts and trundlers on the course throughout winter. The course is shaping into a true links golf course and when the weather picks up is a real test of golf. 2 recent scores, 67 (calm day) , 72 (Stormy day. high winds) 1 week apart.

Looks like green keepers are doing good job when it’s considered it’s been only two year old golf club the condition of fair ways and green are pretty good the only problem is you don’t know which hole goes to where unless you don’t pay for the course map book it would be appreciated if they print the course map on the Back of score card like the way the other golf clubs do could be very confusing course for any new visitors had a great time although it was so windy and heavy shower at the last hole Very friendly helpful staff I’m definitely willing to come and play again
