Horsham Downs Golf Club — Local services in North Island

My partner and I drove into the carpark to be greeted by a senior male as we exited our car. I was wearing a polo (standard golf attire) and my partner a lululemon golf skirt and singlet. The man pointed out a local rule that singlets are prohibited at this golf course. We understand and respect this rule for males as everyone wants a tidy and respectable golf course and male golf singlets are not a common trend. But... as for females we believe this rule should not apply. We were both dressed tidily and we both have played golf for years. We should not be asked to either buy a new female polo (from the pro shop) or leave the golf course entirely. If golf NZ aims to expand the game of golf amongst youth, rules like this are what push youth away from these older-demographic, traditional courses. Senior golf club members treatment of the younger demographic is a very common issue and something I have came across too many times. I was visiting a friend in Hamilton for a weekend of golf and wanted to play nine holes on Sunday morning, only to be rudely told by one of the staff members that there was a tournament on and we had to be off the course in 1 hour. We had called a week in advance and the lady who answered the phone said that the course would be free on that day. When we told the guy at the club, he rudely said that they have volunteers due to the pandemic and that they make mistakes. No apologies, just a rude " that's how it is".
