What a scenic and easy walk down to the waters edge. Some fisherman fishing right by the old lighthouse and no one else was around apart from them. With the beautiful Børvasstindene Mountains serving as a backdrop, we literally forgot about the malstroms! It was a nice calm day, the malstroms were mild if at all any, thus had I not known, I would not be able to tell this small strait had one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. Who needs the malstroms anyways on a beautiful day We enjoyed the sights, with the cantilever Saltstrumen bridge on the right that crosses the Saltstraumen strait between the islands of Knaplundøya and Straumøya, the beautiful old lighthouse on the left and the magnificent mountains...

Very cool. Well worth time and cost ($45 per person). Bodo Taxi is best way to see the largest maelstrom in world. Most time efficient, brings you right to waters edge for safe viewing, smooth and warm ride in comfy Tesla to and from site, and much lower cost per person than rib boats. Easy to book on line. Bodo taxi app (Taxifix) worked like uber. We could see car approaching. Atla, our Driver/ guide spoke perfect English, was very informative and took group photos for us. As Two couples with very limited time in Bodo, we appreciated pick up at Radisson hotel and drop off at airport. Atla knew best time to go to see maximum whirlpools. 3 hours before high or low tide appears best...

Saultstraumen is a beautiful place. A strait with a colossal tide, one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. The maelstrom vortices of up to 10 metres diameter and 5 metres depth (a pretty impressive circular vortice). For the delight of fishermen, the tide brings tons of fish that you can fish straight off the rocks or hire a boat with professional fishermen. You can see the fish jumping in the swirling waters! If you don't like fishing, the scenery is amazing: you can sit enjoying the site of beautiful mountains covered with snow in the background. The sound of the water fills the air. An amazing experience whether you go fishing or sit observing (yes, there are a...

I usually skip touristic spots but I had to see this as this is kind of unique. My advice would be to stay somewhere overnight and go early in the mornings when the tide is at its peak. The currents will be the strongest and very impressive and there won‘t be a lot of people either. And yes: if you choose the wrong time, it’s a normal river. Don’t listen to those that didn’t check the tides before! During the day, buses drop a bunch of tourists which will make your pictures way less scenic. The bridge itself is pretty impressive too. Looks great at dawn and dusk. Awesome place! Is it worth driving 150km just to see this? Depends on what you consider impressive… 🤭
