Trolltunga Sunset-Sunrise - Mid June
This has been one of the best experiences of my life, hands down! I had to reschedule a couple of times due to health issues, and the team was always very supportive. Lucyann was our magnificent guide; she ensured we were comfortable, gave us advice throughout the hike, and kept motivating us. Her attitude was fantastic, flowing with the group's energy, and she made the hike down super fun when some of us were really tired. She knew how to lift our spirits and made us feel super safe with her proper training and qualifications as a mountain guide.
We stayed at Hotel Trolltunga, which I highly recommend. It has excellent facilities, helpful receptionists, a nice breakfast (the pancakes were amazing!), and you can buy a voucher for a packed lunch for your hike (including a bottle of water, a delicious chocolate, an apple, and materials to prepare three sandwiches from the buffet). The night before the hike, the company owner (a super nice and laid-back guy) explains everything you need to know, including expected weather conditions, what to bring, what to expect, and general advice. On the day of the hike, we met at the Trolltunga Active shop at P2, where there is enough time to rent additional equipment if needed. They provide hiking sticks, a liner for the sleeping bag, and a frozen dinner (bread and a choice of fish, vegetarian, chicken, or deer stew). We rented rainproof trousers and jackets, hiking boots, and a backpack. Lucyann then drove us to the beginning of our hike, which is 10 km to Trolltunga and around 8 km to the domes.
The dome can fit up to five people, providing the best glamping experience you can ask for! It’s warm and comfortable, with a nearby toilet offering an unbeatable view. We took breaks along the way, but the dome was the best break as we could relax before arriving at Trolltunga and while waiting for those coming through Via Ferrata. Lucyann was a perfect hostess, preparing hot beverages (coffee, tea, hot chocolate) and surprising us with nice local snacks. While we didn’t dare to try the reindeer sausage, we loved the Lefsa bites. Once the rest of the group arrived and freshened up, we finally made it to Trolltunga around 8 pm. It was perfect as we had it mostly to ourselves, with only a couple of other hikers camping around. Lucyann and Kristopher, the Via Ferrata guide, were patient, helping us take plenty of pictures. Lucyann assisted us in getting the best shots, and we never felt hurried. This was a stark contrast to my one-day hike with Trolltunga Active last year, where the guide rushed us despite advertising an hour at Trolltunga, making this experience so much more enjoyable.
Back at the dome, we had a delicious dinner (we chose deer stew) and a glass of local apple cider. The atmosphere was fantastic, partly due to the great group but also thanks to Lucyann and Kristopher’s positive energy.
The next morning, we were woken up at 7:30, had breakfast at 8:00, and started the descent around 9:30. I decided to visit Trolltunga early in the morning on my own, and it was totally worth it! However, breakfast could be improved. It consisted of bread with spreads (Nutella-like, jam, liver, and tuna) and hot beverages, which wasn't nearly enough for me given the challenging descent ahead. I suggest adding cheese, boiled eggs, and oatmeal, which are also mountain-friendly.
The descent was a bit challenging, but we took breaks and had plenty of opportunities to refill our water bottles. I’ll be forever grateful to Lucyann for providing us with an experience of a lifetime and for taking good care of us, even reminding us to stay hydrated despite our reluctance to drink much water.
Thank you, Lucyann, Kristopher, and...
Read moreFirst of all, I hope you'll be allright with critisism. Why i would not recommend Trolltunga: First, the nature and the atmosphere are amazing, you'll meet fascinating landscapes, nice views and in the end the view from the famous "Trolltunga". If you are a bit sporty, it shouldn't be a problem to cope with the 14km (one way) in less than four hours. If it's not rainy, you can hike with normal running shoes, if its showery, i'd suggest to walk in hiking boots and a rain coat. Now the main point, why Trolltunga was a negative experience for us as a group. The costs, which you'll get comfronted, are shameful. It has three different parking opportunities: P1 on the bottom, P2 and P3 is the highest located parking. The hiking starts above P3. So if you parked in P1 which is approx. 10km away from the start, or P2, which is 3km away from the start, you have to walk beside a narrow mountain road, where the shuttle buses are rushing by every minute and you have to make way for them. In my opinion very uncomfortable and not a good start to a hiking day. But: It doesn't get you in a better financial position if you park far away. For our parking space in P2 (3km away), we paid 500 kr. / 50 € for 12 hours (!!!) and it will cost up to 700 kr. / 70 € for 24 hours. Seriously unworthy and pure rip off. I'll explain this: You don't get any services on the way to Trolltunga. No toilets, seat places as like park banks to take a break, no water fountaines to refill water, a restaurant on the top or anything on the way plus from km nr. 6 there aren't any groomed ways anymore and only two (!) emergency points in 14 km. I'm not cozy, i just ask myself: Where is our money for the parking going? In any case, it will not flow into the infrastructure. It doesn't match the generosity and fairness of norway. I will not recommend the hike in my travel agency and my friends in Switzerland, as long as the parking fees are so overpriced. Nevertheless, the view and the nature are someting of the most beautiful things i've ever...
Read moreWe had a bad experience with this company.
We had booked a boat cruise on the Hardangerfjord on one day and were planning to hike the Trolltunga trail on our own the next day. However, the weather forecast for the day with the Trolltunga hike was absolutely horrible (rain all day). We wanted to switch the two days so we could do the hike in sunny weather and the boat tour on the bad weather day.
We checked the booking tool on the Trolltunga Active website and there were still spots available on the rainy day. So we assumed we could easily switch days. However, Trolltunga Active flatly refused to do this so we lost all our money on the boat tour.
What made the whole experience even more frustrating is that you cannot call anyone from this company to discuss your booking. The phone number on their website connects with the shop, the person there cannot change anything regarding bookings. You can only email to a certain address and they are very slow to respond. We asked in the mail to call us so we could quickly arrange something but we received no call.
The terms and conditions do state that you cannot change a booking 14 days prior to the event. While Trolltunga Active might be correct according to the contract, we feel that this was very customer unfriendly of them. Since there were many spots available on other days, we feel that they could have easily complied with our request.
I recommend to other travellers to not make bookings in advance with this company. In the second week of July (a rather busy period in the high season), most activities still had open spots. With the weather in Norway being so unpredictable, it makes sense so wait and only book on good...
