Unforgettable Journey to Khunjerab Pass (Pakistan–China Border) 📍 Visited: May 2025

This was a once-in-a-lifetime road trip to the Khunjerab Pass, the highest paved border crossing in the world, located at an altitude of over 15,000 ft (4,700m). We rode all the way on a 125cc motorbike, and while the journey was tough, the experience was absolutely worth it.

🛣️ Road & Travel Conditions

The road (N-35, Karakoram Highway) is mostly paved and scenic all the way from Hunza, but the final stretch after Sost becomes extremely challenging—steep, narrow, with sharp turns and unpredictable weather.

Due to the high altitude, oxygen levels drop, and bikes (especially 125cc) can struggle near the top. Make sure your bike is well-maintained and your fuel tank is full before leaving Sost.

🎟️ Entry Fee

There is a PKR 2,000 park entry fee per person at the Khunjerab National Park checkpoint. Keep your CNIC/passport with you. The money goes toward wildlife and park maintenance.

🐃 Wildlife Spotting

On our way, we were lucky to see wild yaks grazing and even spotted a couple of ibex in the distance. It was amazing to witness such wildlife in their natural high-altitude habitat.

Avoid feeding or approaching the animals.

🧭 Important Tips

🚨 Sost Checkpost is crucial. You must clear Sost in the morning (preferably before 11 AM), as they don’t allow vehicles to head toward the border after a certain time.

🚫 No overnight stay at Khunjerab is allowed for tourists. You must return before evening, so plan accordingly.

🔋 No mobile signals near the top, so inform someone beforehand and bring a power bank for emergencies.

🧥 Bring jackets, windbreakers, sunglasses, and sunblock—the sun is strong, but the wind is icy.

You can walk right up to the gate, take photos, and enjoy the views—but crossing into China is not allowed unless you're a diplomat or part of a specific convoy.
