What an amazing place! Tucked into a hillside off a peaceful lane across a creek from the picturesque town of Silves, Quinta de Mata Mouros is a gem of a find. When you arrive at the closed gate, look up to the right for the chain attached to the ancient bell. Ring the bell, and Vanessa will open the gates for you. So fun! Vanessa is a treasure and showed us around the winery before taking us to their wonderful tasting room in a converted water mill.
The wines!!! This was the third winery we visited during our quick 2-day stay in the Algarve, and it was hands down the best! I almost don’t want anyone else to find out about it! Their Alvarinho is quite frankly exquisite. The Rośe is beautifully balanced with lovely fruit and acidity - a summertime porch pounder for sure! Read moreVisited Quinta Convento do Paraiso in January 2025, and it was an unforgettable experience. Laura, our wonderful hostess, gave us a private tour that started with a thrilling jeep ride through the vineyards. Her explanations were so vivid and detailed—covering everything from the clay and limestone soil to the sea breeze, microclimate, and even the influence of nearby orange and clementine trees—that I could almost taste the wine as she described it.
We learned about every step of the winemaking process, from grape picking to production, in such a clear and engaging way. The tour ended in a stunning minimalist tasting room, where our table was beautifully set with fresh bread, Portuguese cheese with oregano, and pumpkin preserves. We sampled a selection of excellent wines (whites, rosé, and reds), with Laura expertly guiding us through each one.
An incredible experience and a must-visit when in Silves,...
Read moreExcellent tour of the vineyards and a good tasting of high quality wines. Other reviews commend Vanessa Simoes, the Wine Tourism manager, and we got the same benefit from her wide knowledge of the history and current operation of the estate as well the Algarve wine industry generally. A lot happening at the estate with more land being brought into use, new plantings, and the development of the "wine experience" for visitors. The views over nearby Silves, the Rio Arade, and the Monchique mountains are spectacular and you will find it hard to leave without buying at least a couple of bottles. We visited at very short notice - it's usually necessary to plan ahead and book your visit through the website. But it's...
