The Fort of Almádena or, also known as the Fort of the River Mouth, is located between the towns of Salema and Burgau, in the Algarve region of Portugal. It was constructed in 1632. Damaged by the 1755 earthquake, it was abandoned in 1849.

The views out to sea are as good as the ruins. They have been sured up sometime recently but are still in bad decay. Detail board is rudimentary. As with all these sites be Careful of your kids as there is very little barrier between you and a drop. The buildings carry on down the slope and I would think the history fascinating, if only it told you. Will have to look online. Welk worth a 15 min stop before going to a beach.

It's a real shame the fort has not been maintained or looked after, it has some beautiful views of the ocean and cliffs but the road getting to the fort is in very poor condition, 4wd car recommended but it is possible to reach by a normal car if it's not a low car . There is walk ways with safety barriers around the fort as there are very steep drops to the cliffs.

A former lookout fort on a hidden cliff overlooking the Atlantic. Pirates and corsairs were always a threat to the southern coast of Portugal. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The coast is breathtaking. We were the only 2 people in this place. Very peaceful! If you are visiting or wild camping here, I gently ask to keep the place...
