The Transfagarasan is not just a road, it’s a place, an experience, and one of the most spectacular routes in Europe!
I’ve traveled this road several times by car, but my most recent trip was by motorcycle, going from Curtea de Arges to Sibiu, and it was unforgettable. The timing was perfect, as I went toward the end of the season, when the traffic was almost nonexistent, allowing me to fully enjoy every curve and view.
The entire road trip is simply amazing, offering breathtaking landscapes, tunnels carved through the mountains, and sharp hairpin turns that make it both thrilling and scenic.
At the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 2,034 meters, lies Balea Lake, a stunning glacial lake surrounded by rugged peaks. The view from up there is truly breathtaking! If you plan to spend the night, there are cabins, hotels, and chalets around the lake, but during the summer season, it’s best to book in advance, as it gets quite crowded.
The Transfagarasan was built between 1970 and 1974, during the Ceausescu era, initially as a strategic military road connecting Wallachia and Transylvania across the Fagaras Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians. It stretches over 90 kilometers and reaches heights of over 2,000 meters, making it the second-highest paved road in Romania.
The photos I’ve attached are from the entire trip along this incredible route, every turn reveals a new spectacular view.

The road twists so beautifully that you can just stand there and admire it. It’s worth remembering, though, that building this road wasn’t exactly a walk in the park – sadly, many workers lost their lives during its construction. Every curve here comes with a bit of history and a price...
It has been my 10th visit of this place in last 11 years and I always love it. It’s stunning view and if you catch time when there aren’t many people is absolutely beautiful. The great thing is that you can come for visit entire year. During summer and winter you can book hotel located at the top and during winter also ice hotel. The only thing I never liked is the kitschy shops surrounding the main road. The road will soon have 50 years from it’s construction...
