It is the northern terminus of the Thomson-East Coast Line and is the northernmost MRT station in Singapore, succeeding Sembawang MRT station. Located in a developing region in Woodlands North, along Woodlands North Coast Road. Presently, only Republic Polytechnic is located in the vicinity, but future plans for the surrounding areas include a business park, commercial developments and residential developments as part of the North Coast Innovation Corridor project that is planned for the future. The Singapore-Johor Bahru Rapid Transit System, initially targeted for opening in 2024, has been currently shelved at the moment. The TEL Station will open on Friday 31 January 2020 as part of Stage 1 of the Thomson-East Coast Line. Bus service 856 operated by SMRT Buses from Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot will be enhanced to call at the bus stop near Woodlands North MRT station towards Woodlands or Yishun at the same time.
