Breg labels itself as a tourist farm but it is only average within this category. They make their own honey and jam, but the breakfast - despite the good bread - was distinctly uninspiring, and in some ways more on the level of what you can expect in a 3-star hotel. Also, portions were far smaller than at any other tourist farm we stayed at in Slovenia. That said, Breg is supremely isolated, very quiet, beautiful, and the sisters who run the place were friendly and helpful, as was their mother, who had very good advice on what to do in Italy. ||Which brings up location: Breg is a literal stone's throw from the Italian border and from almost anywhere in Slovenia is best approached from Italy itself, as the roads in the northwest corner of Goriska Brda are very narrow, curve often and are confusing to follow, even with a map! That said, it's very easy to reach any point in Goriska Brda from Breg, so you can get both isolation and relative ease of travel. Plus Italy beckons, with nearby cities and shopping, plus the seaside is less than an hour away. ||In the end I'd recommend Breg, but don't expect rich offerings in the way of food. Given that they're so isolated, it's good they have a common kitchen, though the fridge is small. In the end, Breg is more a nice pension than a farm, and their prices do seem a bit inflated given what they offer, but they have nicely appointed rooms, friendly people and a very good location. All in all, a good...
Read moreThe 4 of us arrived yesterday at about 12.30 and were pretty much ignored by the 5 or 6 family members who were busy stripping lavender. Eventually we were offered a drink (beer or water were the only choices) but no food as the restaurant was shut. We were actually told at one point that they were too busy with farm work to assist us much at all.||We were told our rooms were another 500m away and as the restaurant was shut they would bring it to us at 6.30. Cold meat, soup, bread and crepes arrived on time and was ok. ||We had the worst sleep since getting off the plane 5 weeks ago. It was hot and there was no air cond or even a fan but when we opened the windows to try to get some air flow we were attacked by squadrons of mosquitos. ||Breakfast was stale bread, homemade jam, yoghurt, more cold meat and cornflakes and we were told the meal last night cost 13 euros each.||My advice - don't stop here. Keep going in whatever direction you are heading and stay...
Read moreDiscovering Tourist Farm Breg was a sweet serendipity. We learnt about it from other travellers who were raving about delicious food with lavender. So, we decided to give it a try. Even though we didn't know the address, we had no problems finding the place by just following their signs. ||When we got there, we were charmed by the cosiness of the interior, and by how friendly we were accepted by the hosts. ||We ordered 3 different lavender dishes - and though I was a bit sceptical about eating that many lavender dishes (especially due to its distinctive flavour), each plate presented lavender in a different way. And each of them was mouth-watering! ||We also had some delicious house wine that complemented the food perfectly.||||I know that in the future I'll be taking my taste buds for another lavender ride - and I would recommend you to...
