I brought a friend here for lunch as a treat and to enjoy the seasonal lunch special. We were shown to a great table that had a lovely view, lots of sun and eventually a pretty nice sunset (it was a long lunch).
Our starters of garlic snails and calamari were great - the calamari is always cooked to perfection. We each had a veggie stack as the main and while it is a nice healthy option, I think it would be better if it came with a side as the portion isn't particulary filling and I am not sure I would pay the full price on any other day as it is not worth R135. We decided to indulge in dessert and the Hussar Ice Cream Dessert and Death by Chocolate were very pleasant and tasty. We also each had a glass of the Van Loveren Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend which is one of the nicest wines I have ever had.
Unfortunately, the service really tainted our experience. It was extremely slow and we felt abandoned at times. When we asked for the bill (which was five hours after we arrived), our waiter seemed really annoyed that we weren't ordering more coffee or drinks. A manager did come to our table and I mentioned that the service needed improvement and while he promised to speak to his staff, nothing changed. This is a pity as we saw many other tables around us getting great and attentive service.
Overall, the seasonal lunch menu is good value for money, the setting is lovely, and the restaurant is quiet enough to have a decent conversation. However, the poor service did spoil the overall experience, which is a real pity, because just a little more attentiveness (certainly in line with what we saw other patrons getting) would make my rating...
Read moreI'm deeply disappointed. As a national traveller, I have ashen at almost all of the Hussar Grills in the country. The Kempton Park attempt is far from the required standard for the franchise.
Our scruffy waiter messed up the drinks, the mains, the puddings, the bill, and our evening. We found ourselves constantly looking for him and ordering through other waiters. We asked for 5 minutes to order drinks, and 20 minutes later, we grabbed someone else to get drinks. Which then arrived incorrectly and had to be sent back.
Steaks were dreadful. Tough and overcooked. The fish and chips portion was so thin I could not tell what was fish and what were chips. The Chateaubriands steak was destroyed, tasteless, and overcooked. Also, the meat was very tough. The same comment was said of the other steak at the table. You need a better meat supplier or a better chef!
General decor completely lacks the ambience of other Hussar Grills. Lighting is harsh, and there was an unrelenting cold wind blowing through the whole place, which chilled our food and our mood.
All in all, a very poor reflection on the franchise, which I see, is mirrored in a lot of other comments recently.
I have never given a solid 1star rating before, but the Hussar Grill is my favourite upmarket restaurant, and the Kempton Park option is simply unacceptable. I suggest that management visit the franchises in Monti Casino, PE, and Paarl to...
Read moreEDIT, you sent me a link to review the wrong place. i dined in Kempton park, not Camps Bay. great job PR team.
Overpriced, terrible quality. My steak 500g sirloin(medium rare) was touching blue rare with a stronger than normal meaty smell(not a great sign), with meat tendon so tuff i couldn't cut it. Accomplished with a crusty dried out peppercorn sauce on the side and âthe ladyâ forgot the chips as mentioned by a random waiter. took 2 bites of the undercooked steak and sent it back, and requested rather not to have another steak, restaurant rules 101 never request a remake of a meal... My families meals were ok, overpriced dry pork loin ribs for my son, semi undercooked burger for my daughter, my wife's meal(on her birthday) was not bad at least. Overall as a 1st time Hussar Grill customer, not impressed. To say sorry for such a horrible experience , 2 shots of chocolate sauce with a drop of cream on top And a bottle of the cheapest wine on the menu. R1100 later and i didn't...
