Depending what you want from a beach will determine how you review this one.
The designated narrow swimming area in the sea has, like many beaches on the North Coast, steep areas of approach from the sand and the waves crash hard, making swimming for all but the better swimmers quite dangerous. However, there are lifeguards on duty during normal times, which made me feel more secure. The entry into the parking area has booms and a nominal payment, which might add to security at the beach.
The times that I did visit Blythedale Beach had mainly fishermen around and I didn't see any vagrants or beggars. Overall, there were few visitors, but to be fair I didn't visit during the Dec/Jan school holidays. Access to the beach is straightforward and one doesn't feel isolated or unsafe on the approach. There is also a comprehensive information board at the entrance explaining various aspects of the wildlife and ecozone.
One disappointment was the amount of litter on the sand (cans, bottles, papers), despite there being a few dustbins around. From what I saw, it was mainly locals visiting this beach and that is all the more disappointing as one would expect them to care more about their environment.
Summing up from my perspective, if you want to stroll on a beach and get your feet wet, or take pictures of family and friends by the seaside, or have few people around while you do so, then this beach could work for you. I wouldn't hurry to swim here, but to outward appearances the beach seems safe and probably worth a visit to guage its value compared to other beaches...
Read moreThe beaches are closed due to lockdown regulations. Only a few anglers were present on my visit. Apart from this the beach was quiet and peaceful. The shoreline is not the best in my opinion for a relaxed day out on the beach with family. There are ample facilities for a braai and relaxing on the grass verges with the kids. The restaurant that existed there is now derelict and crying out for attention. I wonder if this could be reopened as a convenience store for the residents of...
Read moreEverything is great but the beach smacks the hell out of you. You barely walk into the ocean and it pile drives you. And I love the waves but it is not for kids. But the rest is great. If you do go into the ocean wear those little feet protectors because the sand (while in the ocean) hurt your feet after a while. Trust me it sounds stupid but do it. If you liked getting smacked go if you like a calm sea no. But chilling is great and the views are...
