We’ve been loyal customers of Hingham Nursery for many years, but unfortunately our experience today was extremely disappointing.
We went in to buy some plastic pots, and inside each pot was a sticker marked “R400”. Naturally, we assumed that was the price — after all, why else would there be a sticker with “R400” inside a pot? We thought, “Wow, R400 for two pots — not bad!” So we decided to get four of the smaller pots (expecting to pay around R800) and one larger pot marked just over R500.
When we got to the counter, we were shocked to be told the total was over R4 000. The cashier then explained that the “R400” and “R500” stickers were not prices, but internal product codes. Honestly, how is a customer supposed to know that? To make things worse, the staff insisted there was a price list nearby, but we looked carefully — there was none visible anywhere near the display.
When we questioned the pricing, we were met with attitude and told that the pots are expensive because they’re imported from Brazil. In the end, we only took one of the smaller pots — mainly because holes had already been drilled in the bottom, which made it feel like a rip-off tactic.
As we left, we bumped into another couple who said they’d had the exact same experience — confused by the same stickers and ending up paying much more because they felt embarrassed and pressured to go through with it.
It’s really disappointing and feels like customer exploitation. We’ve supported Hingham for years, but this experience left a bad impression and made us think twice...

Read moreI cannot express enough my appreciation for the wonderful service I received from Gail at the Hingham Nursery in Durban North. I spent a couple of days trying to source a tree to have sent to a nursing home in Pinetown in memory of my grandmother who recently passed away. This was no easy task as I live in Montreal, Canada and with the time difference and the fact that I was unable to find an online florist to handle this order, I was at my wits end. Gail kindly sent me pictures of various plants and pots that she had in stock so that I could select the combination I wanted. She then personally made the delivery to ensure it would arrive in time for the service. Thanks so much Gail for all your help! The tree is perfectly placed and...
