The tree, Sri Maha Bodhi (also known as ‘Jaya Siri Maha Bodhiya’), located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura serves as the heart of the city. It is claimed to be the oldest living tree with a documented history. According to the chronicles, this sacred tree was planted in the ‘Maha Megha Vana’ (‘Maha Mewuna Uyana’) Royal Park in Anuradhapura in the month of December circa 288 BCE. According to tradition, it is the only living artifact that touched the Buddha as he attained enlightenment while seated with his back against it. Life stories of the Buddha describe his own respectful contemplation of the tree in the weeks following his enlightenment.

These are the main grounds around the sacred tree. Locals have all kinds of offerings and read or chant. Interesting sight to see.

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is one of the most sacred places for Buddhists in the world, and it is located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. This tree is very special because it is believed to be a branch of the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago. According to history, it was brought to Sri Lanka by Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka of India, during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC. Since then, it has been worshiped continuously without interruption, making it the oldest historically documented tree in the world. The tree is protected by walls and railings, and many pilgrims come daily to offer flowers, oil lamps, and prayers with great devotion. It is also surrounded by monasteries, shrines, and ancient ruins, which show the importance of Buddhism in the cultural and spiritual life of Sri Lanka. People believe that worshiping at Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi brings blessings, good health, and success in life. Special ceremonies and festivals are held here throughout the year, especially on Poya days, where thousands of devotees gather to pay respect. The tree has survived many natural challenges and even threats from human activities, but it still stands strong, symbolizing peace, faith, and the deep bond between Buddhism and Sri Lankan history. Visiting Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is not only a spiritual experience but also a journey into the ancient heritage...
