This place is a hidden gem. Absolutely stunning. It has been well preserved and well maintained too. Great place to visit for all ages if you just want to enjoy the surroundings, sit and read here on a sunny day, taking photographs or just relaxing in the grounds. You get a sense of what the place would have looked like back in the 12th century. It must have been strategically built next to the brook and River. This place is a gem and fairly quiet. Founded around 1154 It was home to the monks of the Cluniac order. After many disputes with its hierarchy it went alone? The priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1530s After the Dissolution the priory it had multiple owners until it was acquired by Barnsley Borough council in 1932. If you like historical sites then it’s worth a visit, with buildings, walls, and foundations in various states of repair. The main priory buildings are almost entirely ruinous but some interesting details survive. The gatehouse and admin barn/building are the two most complete structures on site.
