A wee walled garden in Balerno, Edinburgh. Run by National Trust Scotland this small garden is nice for a short walk incorporating some other paths outside in a woodland with horses. Not much to see at this time of year so we need to return in summer. 😎 There are only a few parking spaces but Currie Rugby Club is a short distance away and it has a coffee shop (Breakout Club) for your takeaway. 😋

beatam vistam inveni inter umida prata "I chanced upon a beautiful sight amongst the damp meadows." .According to Watson’s Celtic Place Names, the name Malleny may be derived from Magh Leanaidhe meaning “plain of the damp meadows." Every year, the horse chestnut immediately behind the doocot at Malleny is the first tree to turn.

Smallish garden maintained by the NTS. It hosts the national collection of rose varieties but given I visited in March, they were not in bloom. The 400 year old yew trees are impressive and I liked the gateway into the garden which bears the coat of arms of the last family to own Malleny House.

Incredibly disappointed with this visit. We paid the honesty box £7 before entering and felt completely robbed by the time we left. It's receiving little attention; the grass appears to be tended to but there's no flowers at all apart from the bulbs. The water feature hasn't been cleaned in what looks like years as there is significant moss covering every tier. Inside the glasshouse there are several dying or dead plants, with one cactus that has tipped over and been left broken - it's very clearly not receiving any attention and is a real shame. The National Trust will blame COVID for their failure to look after the garden, but if you take a look around the other gardens in the city they haven't managed this level of disregard. There's beer bottles littered around some of the hedges and there are no bins anywhere on site - useless. If I thought I could, I would have attempted to reach into the box and get my seven quid back. Go elsewhere for a sunny garden walk - this place isn't worth your...

Not being bad with the 3 STARS Just that we arrived on site with our daughter's dog to find the garden and house where closed to the public, as a film crew had taken over for the week days for a month of filming. We ended up walking the small woodland surrounding the house. Hopefully I can change the star rating on my next visit. Luckily for us the excellent dog friendly cafe attached to the local rugby club beside the entrance to the gardens was very...
