We parked at The Sill, the review is for the section of the wall between Steel Rigg and just before milecastle 37.
We walked from The Sill up to where the walk meets the path from Steel Rigg carpark, and walked along the wall until shortly before milecastle 37 where we turned around as both our kids had headed back and it was getting late (I'd wanted to walk to Housesteads, but it was another 20 minutes on, plus return).
This is a really lovely walk. No good for most people with mobility issues though, and some parts not suitable for small children - there are some steep ascents and descents and along the ridge above the lake, and some dramatic drops very close to the path edge - it is a long way down!
A reasonably fit person can do this walk fairly easily. Great views in different directions and the landscape isn't the same for the whole walk, making it interesting. The first part has a quite intact section of wall and is quite rocky, the walk above the loch is very pretty along a meandering path among the pines, birches and rowan trees, then there's farmland complete with cute farmhouse, sheep, cattle etc.
In hindsight, if you don't have all day for this walk, a good plan would be to have someone pick you up at Housesteads carpark (or check bus times if using...
Read morePerfectly located car park for quick Hadrian's Wall/Sycamore Tree Gap walk. Worth every penny. As of April 2023 it is £4 for the first 3h and £2 for each additional hour, with £10 daily maximum charge. As for the walk, it really shouldn't take longer than 2-3h. I'm fat and I took a lot of photo breaks and it took me 2.15h Of course much longer loops are possible from this starting point. Car park is rather small, so early arrival advised. It also has rather narrow spaces, so think twice if you have big SUV/pick-up. For the same reason campers not advised, car park is also...
Read moreThe car park costs £3 for 3 hours and £2 for every hour after up to £10 for the day. It is a very expensive car park when you can park for free at other forts as a member and most other car parks in Northumberland are free. There are no toilets at the car park. You can walk from this car park along Hadrian's Wall to Homestead Fort. The walk and back is 6 miles. Depending on how fit and how fast you walk you may just be able to do the walk in 3 hours but I would suggest paying more for car parking. The scenery is beautiful and you do get to see sections of the...
