Went for a Stargazing weekend. Positives: excellent food and accommodation. Location is ideal for walking Hadrian's wall/ visiting Sycamore Gap. Brilliant little microbrewery and tap room. Bar staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Negatives: very awkward interaction with one restaurant waitress on the first evening. Seen to the table but only 3 menus for 4 of us. She said she would get one but didn't. My wife went up to get it after some time only for the waitress to say " I can get that for you"! A bit late. Followed by no-one coming to take a drink or food order for over 20 minutes so we had to attract her attention. She did not apologise for the delay butclaimed to have been busy. We had watched her setting up tables for breakfast instead yet this was around 7.40 pm. When challenged on this she became aggressive rather than apologetic. She took the order but when asked for a jug of water, she ignored the request and stormed off. (the water did arrive, she just failed to acknowledge the request. This put our group at unease as we had 2 more breakfast and 1 dinner service to go! This may seem petty but it reaput a dampener on the weekend. Her customer service skills were non existent. All the other servers were polite, frank attentive. The bar seems to discourage later evening drinks as all the chairs/stools get put up on the tables as people leave, well before last orders. After coming in from the stargazing event around 10pm on a Sunday night, we weren't even sure that the bar was open. It was and the team were friendly but it just wasn't a welcoming environment to see the place ready for hoovering!

Finally, the stargazing event was badly organised. There was no information at check in. We got most info from one of the waitresses and even then the directions weren't clear. We have been to an event down south before which had better presented information. The actual set up is very good with a great guest speaker. Unfortunately for us, rain and cloud stopped us from using the telescopes outside. The planetarium was an excellent facility.

It is a shame that these issues affected what promised to be a great visit to...

After reading lots of good reviews we thought we would come for dinner. After arriving at the door a few staff standing at the bar turned and looked at us then looked back no acknowledgement for at least a few minutes. Not a big deal but still not very welcoming. Staff came eventually we were asked if we wanted to sit in or outside. We said we wanted to sit inside if possible as we had been out exploring in the sun all day. The waitress then took us outside to a table to sit as she clearly wasn't listening we again said we'd prefer to be inside if possible she looked annoyed and took us back inside to a table. We weren't even seated with masks off before we were asked what we wanted to drink which felt really rushed especially as we had our son and would have liked to sit and look at beer menu etc. My husband picked out the pale ale which was flat but felt like we'd be bothering staff so didn't complain. Food menu was good and good choice for kids too. As there was no chicken nuggets on main menu only starters we asked if we could swap the scampi in main for chicken. We were advised this was no problem. I ordered chicken burger and my husband the game pie. Food came quickly however we were given the scampi and chicken nuggets. Again staff not listening! They then took scampi back and gave us the chicken. The burger was nice chicken well cooked however only one tiny bit of streaky bacon on it. My husband didn't rate the pie at all saying flavour wasn't great. No one checked on us throughout our meal and we were left with dirty plates for around 15 mins while staff chatted in a group at the bar. When we came to get bill we were charged for both kids scampi and chicken. I explained to staff about the mix up and was told it was taken off although it was clearly still being charged on the bill. It was almost as if it was too much effort to change it so the girl pretended it was off. I showed on the bill where it had been charged again and eventually it was taken off but no apology given for the mix up. At around ยฃ45 for a main meal and drink for 2 adults and 1 child it was just disappointing and staff serving really...

Absolutely outstanding pub / restaurant ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Check out andrews_adventures on Instagram.

Great food, atmosphere and beer, with very friendly and helpful staff too. The landlord is a very socialable chap, ensuring I was all good.

Upon arrival, I had to explain that i have bars in the lower lumbar region and plates in the cervical area of my spine. This causes issues with my arms, legs, and speech, where it can be challenging for me to communicate at times.

The staff were all brilliant, making no fuss treating me like an able bodied person as well as making a fuss over Winston, my service dog. Exactly how a person with disabilities should be treated instead of being patronised or spoken down to. Thank you, guys.

I'd spent 4 hours or so in here having a GREAT Maximus burger, fries, etc, for brunch ๐Ÿ˜‹. It's was worth every penny, real Beefburgers too, very tasty indeed. In addition to several home brewed real ale pints (only ยฃ4.60 & 5.4% !! ) which I really enjoyed.

I was staying at the Y.H.A. next door and had managed to walk to the pub, although it was a bit of an effort due to spinal issues to get moving again when I was ready to leave. After sitting for so long at the bar in the one place, I found it a challenge to walk as the pain had increased with decreased motorbilty.

Mainly due to siezing up, which is a regular occurrence. Meghan, a lovely lady, part of the pub staff, walked me in the dark and rain back to the hostel to ensure I got back safely.

How GREAT was that, bless her? Absolutely outstanding young lady and a great credit to the pub, too. Thank you so much, Meghan ๐Ÿ‘Œ

During my 5 day stay, I visited a cpl of other times trying out Sampi, as well as a spicey chicken burger. Both meals were absolutely outstanding ๐Ÿ˜‹ and well worth every penny, as was the service.

I managed to get myself back on every other visit, thankfully ๐Ÿ˜Š

A BIG thank you to all of the marvellous staff that I interacted with, I really appreciate all your help and time.

This pub certainly sets the standard in every way possible. See you in the spring.

Regards

Andrew...

Firstly- who picks the music? A very weird and obtrusive 80s playlist completely out of step with the environment. The food - your Cumberland sausage is very bland and tasteless not matching the description. Seemed like a cheap catering company job not hand-made. No seasoning and only just cooked enough with no charring or flavour to the outside. This was my second choice as you only had one steak left at 6.30pm on a Saturday. The bhaji burger was overcooked. We sent the cheesecake back as it had blue spots which looked like mould which the chef denied but it put my wife off and neither of the portions were finished (just swap it regardless of the chef's ego). The steak was ordered medium rare and came out medium well. I can do way better with a trip to Aldi and cooking at home. The environment itself was so untidy. Junk electricals just dumped on the shelf and the floor. An antler decoration looked like it had come off the wall and just dumped on top of a high chair. Boxes of deliveries and packs of salt lying around. Cardboard box of polystyrene behind one of our seats belonged in the bin. You must have a store room somewhere and it would take less than 5 minutes to tidy these out of your front-of-house before service. Sloppy. The table (between the toilets) was wobbly and needs fixing or chucking out. The waiters were v slow to come back to check or clear the table (we had to ask). You can do much better than this. We're local (Tow House) and dont often go out Saturday night but we'll be going into Hexham or Haltwhistle to try many other places before we ever come back to you for an evening meal. Shame as the Sunday roast we had a few weeks back was pretty good. We had friends staying with us from down south and built your place up as a meal to look forward to and they were really disappointed. I get it you may be busy and short of staff but if you can't do the basics and make an experience which is superior to eating and drinking at home, people won't come back.

We decided to have our wedding reception and party at The Twice Brewed and, to say they absolutely smashed it, would be an understatement! As local Northumbrians, we were delighted to find that The Twice Brewed was able to host our 120 guests. An 18x9m marquee fitted perfectly in the courtyard and the function room, brewery bar and garden provided great breakout for our guests between the meal and dancing. The food was absolutely exquisite and totally bespoke to the needs of our guests. The service, from planning and communication a year before, to the staff and service on the day, was second to none. The night before and on the day the staff without a doubt went the extra mile to ensure that we had everything we and our guests needed. We felt utterly at ease and thoroughly enjoyed the whole planning process. Some particularly touching aspects to the wedding were being able to have our own beer brewed and served for our guests (this was part of our wedding favour); the chef managing to stitch together our collapsed 3 tier cake (sourced elsewhere) so that it looked like new; and the complete dedication of the staff in helping us with the set up and set down for the day. A big thank you to Andy, Matthew and the whole team for playing such a huge part in a day that we'll remember for the rest of our lives. If you're looking for a proper Northumbrian wedding (we had photos at Steel Rigg too) we can't recommend The Twice Brewed enough!
