This is a hidden gem.. You would never find unless you have navigation. Not a particular large place but I loved it. Purpose dug, skillfully designed maturing lovely. I personally feel this place is going places. Unfortunately seems not really popular venue, why I don't know. Has everything for the angler. Well stocked shop, looks like a canteen there too. Plenty of parking, really great management, Peter.. Really friendly, plenty of helpful advice where is the best areas.. I really wish I lived closer. I would be there most evenings. Well if you have not been there. I strongly recommend you give it a go. There's a variety of different options on your ticket. I choose catch & realise, kill 3. I realised 6 in total. Killed 3. The fish were very aggressive takes. Giving a nice little battle for 10 minutes or so. It's fantastic dry fly fishing I thought. Need to induce the take occasionally. As they were coming up for the hopper and missing it by an inch. There is plenty of action on the three waters.. My next visit is going to be September 2023. I will be bring my 10 year old daughter learning because of the location, friendly, safe relaxing atmosphere I experienced there I know she can wonder, And be safe. And Peter is never too far away.. Really looking forward to returning. Definitely a...
Read moreFirst of all I just want to say I had an amazing time at Thornwood, 10/10! I recon its one of the best fishing experiences you could get, close to London.
I went to Thornwood after fishing three times at Walthamstow, without catching any Trout (Feb-March). Thornwood was above all expectations. Before I got there I thought it would be to easy, to catch trout, which I dont fancy. So I stayed almost all day at the Havring Lake. And yes I got a real challange. After 6 hours of fishing I managed to get one take, but lost the fish. There was alot of rising trout, however they were tricky to get biting on the dryfly. I went to the first lake were its normally easier, in the catch and kill section, stocked with rainbow. The guide, John, was close by and helped me with the selection of fly, and got some much needed casting tips. (I am on my second season fly fishing) I got a nice rainbow on after 20-30 min and I was very happy! :) John was kind enough to give me a cebletrory beer after my first Rainbow was landed.
The atmosphere at Thornwood was very friendly. The owner and the guide there were very nice people. The area is quiet and not crowded with people. The scenery is like a lake in...
Read moreI first fished here around 13 years ago when the fishery hadn't long opened, it was in its infancy with young saplings and hardly any grass. What a pleasant surprise it was when I returned last weekend to find a fully established complex of lakes with trees and beautifully kept grass banks. The lakes cater for all anglers whether it be catch and release on three springs for fish ranging from 2lb to double figures or Trenches lake which is for the more discerning specimen hunter with rainbow trout from 6lb, spartic and browns from 3.5lb along with Tiger trout. They're is also the stalking pool if you fancy something more intimate which holds some very large brown trout. Peter the owner is very helpful and always on hand to offer advice, he has a well stocked tackle shop which has a huge selection of flies so you should be able to find the fly of the day! There are tea and coffee making facilities which is welcome on cold days. Both myself and my children had a wonderful day and we all managed to catch a few fish to take home along with a few catch and release. I thoroughly recommend a visit to this wonderful fishery, you won't be...
