We did the connoisseurs tour last week and had a great experience. I did over 20 distillery tours/tastings and this one was by far the best experience of them all. I recommend booking in advance. We arrived unannounced and where lucky that the team was able to squeeze in an extra tour just for my group because the normal one was already full.
We had Karin as our guide who gave us a very fun and informative tour. Of course she told us all the usual information but she tailored this to our level of knowledge so it didnβt feel like hearing the same old story again. She also had some great stories about cask selection, Billy Walkers vision for the distillery and the industry in general. During our tour we also spoke with both Philip who operated the stills and Lindsey who worked in the warehouse. Both of them really took their time to talk to us to explain exactly what they did and gave us a great insight in there day to day job and the behind the scene of the distillery. Everyone in the distillery made us feel very welcome and where sincerely interested in us as well.
The tasting was also great. We got 5 whiskyβs and a good explanation. The 15 and 25 year old a 1989 single cask and the 2 distillery exclusives. We felt they were all very good but why believe me when you can taste them yourself? There are drivers packages available.
During our tasting Karin also helped us with by arranging a good place to park our motorhome and arranged a taxi to bring us to our next appointment. She didnβt mind helping at all.
I would highly recommend anyone to visit...
Β Β Β Read moreGlenallachie Distillery lived up to all of my expectations in every way! Since I've started to become a whisky enthusiast I've loved this brand and their whisky so visiting the distillery was a dream come true. Absolutely smashing. From the moment I arrived I was warmly greeted by Kelli and Steve at the shop. I had a browse of the shop and considered what to purchase and they even made me a coffee while I awaited the start time for my tour - very kind! The tour guide was Kevin and he brought a unique flavour to it as he is from France! A lot of distillery tours are similar but Kevin kept it interesting throughout and we had a good laugh. There were five others on my tour and it was great to meet these tremendous people too! After the tour I made a significant purchase at the shop and really enjoyed it. The handfills are epic! I was driving so for the tasting I nosed the whiskies but put them into drivers drams bottles to try later. I've since tried them and they're all smashing, beautiful. Unfortunately Billy Walker wasn't there when I was but maybe I'll get to meet him another time. My visit here confirms that Glenallachie is my favourite distillery, closely followed by Arran (Lochranza). Everyone here is lovely. They even helped me carry my purchases to my car. It's a very practical distillery but the bar and shop are very well furnished and designed. Lovely location in the middle of the countryside just outside of Aberlour. Highly recommended and I can't wait to return in the...
Β Β Β Read moreWe attend as part of the whisky festival and to be honest I was a bit underwhelmed by the experience. The tour cost Β£60 each and I do not believe we got value for money. Particularly when comparing to other distillery tours we undertook, one at Β£10. It started with a video before being taken around, we saw and heard all the usual tour stuff. It was interesting to see the testing lab, but would have been even better to see it action!
The best part of the tour was meeting the warehouse manager, who was so knowledgeable and passionate about his job, he certainly left a good lasting impression for me.
The tasting was a bit underwhelming too. There were 5 small tots in a travel bag with a non personalised cairn glass. There was no context or discussion about any of the whiskys. So we didn't get any information about each, as to what it was, etc. I expected more, and certainly for the price expected a lot more. It didn't really inspire me to go into the shop to buy more, i felt they had had enough of my hard earned money already, nor to be an advocate or ambassador for the name when sharing with information with other whisky drinkers. I have had much better tour experiences.
I actually got better value out of one of the dinners, 3 course meal and 4...
