My family (wife and 4 kids, aged 9-13) came down Swirral Edge having gone up Striding Edge on a glorious Sunday in the Easter holidays. All of us are experienced walkers with some scrambling experience and were all wearing suitable footwear etc (beggars belief some of the footwear choices I saw on the walk ranging from Converse to leather-soled casual boots!)
Weather conditions were perfect, sunny and very light breeze, though predictably busy for a school holiday weekend with amazing weather, which was probably the greatest challenge - we respectfully queued up behind a multi-generational family that was descending and taking their time (right thing to do) whilst we had several groups of people darting and squeezing past us so they could take quicker descent lines. This felt like the riskiest part of the whole Helvellyn round and it was just because people aren't considerate enough to allow people to take their time and descend safely in control.
Views back across to Striding Edge and Red Tarn were spectacular.
