My family (wife and 4 kids, aged 9-13) came down Swirral Edge having gone up Striding Edge on a glorious Sunday in the Easter holidays. All of us are experienced walkers with some scrambling experience and were all wearing suitable footwear etc (beggars belief some of the footwear choices I saw on the walk ranging from Converse to leather-soled casual boots!) Weather conditions were perfect, sunny and very light breeze, though predictably busy for a school holiday weekend with amazing weather, which was probably the greatest challenge - we respectfully queued up behind a multi-generational family that was descending and taking their time (right thing to do) whilst we had several groups of people darting and squeezing past us so they could take quicker descent lines. This felt like the riskiest part of the whole Helvellyn round and it was just because people aren't considerate enough to allow people to take their time and descend safely in control. Views back across to Striding Edge and Red Tarn were spectacular. Come prepared, know what to expect and you will have a fabulous day!

Prefer this grade 1 scramble to oppose to Striding edge which is located opposite it on Helvellyn. We did the loop in reverse so there's a steep climb up to the Swirral edge. Great fun scrambling up though. Just don't go on the weekends or when the weather is too bad as it can be dangerous

Fantastic walk and climb for the experienced. Don't attempt if you are a novice as there are some big drops and people have died on helvellyn

Beautiful spot to admire Helvellyn and to see the lake. Well worth a visit. I'd suggest coming down Swirral instead of going up if, but either...
