Well, we pulled into the yard as we had found out about the arts, crafts and the herdwick sheep experience at Yew Tree Farm.||However upon arrival we were accosted by a demented lady who immediately intercepted us upon alighting our vehicles. ||The lady was seemingly doing laps of the farm screaming “this is not an open farm” on loop as she stomped past us maniacally, her arms swinging wildly like some demented ape. As we stood there shocked just 2 minutes later she intercepted us again, clearly in some kind of demonic orbit of the property.||Of course she reminded us again “this is not an open farm” and we tried to reason with her, can we have a look around? We asked. Upon hearing this however, her face contorted into a what I can only describe as a bulldog chewing a wasp.||What was shocking, is that this unwelcome experience was despite the farm having a butchers, shop, sheep experience, refreshments and enough signage to put an M6 service station to shame.||The old shabby dog wandering around was however lovely and managed to refrain from threatening to throw us off the property.||We decided to leave, but I do hope that the crazy woman is caught and humanely made safe before she attacks...
Read moreI did the Herdwick Experience with a friend, having received vouchers as a birthday gift. The day exceeded all our our expectations. The experience is split into two halves: a talk about Herdwicks and farming, and then an opportunity to meet the 'ambassador flock'. We arrived to a warm welcome from Mel and had the toilets and free tea and coffee facilities pointed out to us. The farm is extremely beautiful and we enjoyed the company of the dogs and cats while we waited for the experience to start. The talk was fascinating and offered a really interesting insight into farming life. Mel was engaging, informative and humorous and offered us plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Then, after a brief comfort break, we walked up to the field to meet the sheep. This was a very special experience. The ambassador flock is so friendly and calm and meeting them was a real highlight. I would thoroughly recommend the Herdwick Experience, and we had a fantastic time.||(It's worth being aware that the talk does describe farming methods. Mel did ask if anyone was vegetarian or vegan, and I imagine that if you were uncomfortable with this content, you'd have the option of...
Read moreJust got back from the Herdwick experience at Yew Tree Farm - what an amazing day! We we warmly welcomed to the farm and had a good grounding in the history of the breed and farming before walking up to the field to meet the Herdwick ambassador flock where we had an unforgettable time hanging out with the flock. An amazing and memorable experience which I cannot recommend highly enough! There is also the opportunity to purchase some of the heritage meat after the experience is over. Just a point about some recent negative reviews; 1) you are told on the website that the experience doesnt allow for walk ins and must be pre-booked, 2) it's a WORKING FARM not a theme park, the animals here are not pets and 3) the website clearly states the cafe is 2 miles away and not on site. Do not let negative (and stupid!) reviews put you off from booking this unforgettable...
