Brilliant Museum - Well Worth a Visit! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Visited during English Heritage Week and what a fantastic find this was! The REME Museum exceeded all expectations with loads to see and do for visitors of all ages. What made it special: Interactive elements throughout - not just looking at displays but actually getting hands-on Large screen interactive games where you can operate machines - brilliant fun for kids and adults alike Displays flow really well and never felt overcrowded, even during the free entry weekend Perfect mix of historical artifacts and engaging modern presentation Practical details: Spent around 3 hours there and could easily have stayed longer Plenty of parking available - no stress getting there Lovely café for a break (definitely needed after 3 hours!) Good shop with relevant items - nice to browse Overall: This museum really knows how to engage visitors. The interactive approach makes military engineering history come alive rather than just being static displays. Great for families but equally fascinating for adults interested in the technical side of things. Would definitely recommend visiting - and we'll certainly be back! Even without the English Heritage Week free entry, this would be excellent value. Highly recommended for anyone interested in military history, engineering, or just wanting a...
Read moreI enjoyed my visit and learnt a lot. I was concerned that the polished dark wood that could be seen in reception would lead through to a dated museum but it was actually very well designed and modern. The information boards and wide range of exhibits were fascinating. I didn't think the big red recovery truck was a good fit - I'd prefer a military vehicle and I note that there was a much admired civilian-owned American King & Country DD104 truck at a Shuttleworth vehicle and airshow recently and this type of vehicle is probably sold off when too difficult to maintain. Also a lot of the interesting recovery kit is on top of the vehicles so I would have liked steps to a higher viewing position, but this may be a problem with children visiting. There is a huge display of guns, through the ages, if you are into that sort of thing. Excellent cafe/restaurant. Easy parking. Recommended for any young person interested in the military and how machines work, who could consider employment with REME rather than drift into a less rewarding...
Read moreTook my 90yo Grandfather there today as he used to serve in REME and this weekend they are doing a wartime re-enactment with public demonstrations, weapon firing and a public performance by the Lyneham Military Wives Choir - all of which were excellent and thoroughly entertaining.
A few breaks in the on-site cafe provided much needed respite and they even catered for my gluten intolerance with a gluten free bread roll for very nice pleasant bacon roll. I thoroughly recommend their coffee. (Much better than what they had last year)!
The staff and volunteers were great, interactive and chatty as were the many re-enactors wearing period costume and uniform.
I hope they trust this event next year. My only recommendations on things they could do better would be to (a) provide seating outside in the areas of the live demonstrations and (b) have a small PA system as we couldn't hear much of the talking and neither could those around us which was dissapointing.
Not withstanding this, well run, and would certainly go again. Kudos...
