UPDATE FOR 2024! I have been to Nightmare Realm several times since I originally wrote this review, and it just keeps getting better!
I have been to many haunts all over Michigan, but this one stands out to me as the best in many ways compared to the bigger, pricier haunts. The one complaint I usually have about the other haunted attractions I've been to is their weak, inconsistent, or non-existent story lines. You walk into a house, then you're in a swamp, then you're in a carnival, then aliens, etc.? That is not at all the case with Nightmare Realm. They set up the story right away, incorporating the rules into the theme. You can't touch the "townspeople" because of a flesh-eating infection for instance. While waiting to enter, you learn about Trista, around whom the story revolves. On my visit, the crowds were small and wait times very short, unlike many other haunted attractions like Niles Scream Park where you have to contend with thousands of guests despite timed entry tickets. Upon entering the actual haunt, the first location is Trista's house, which turns out to be an ante room to send in small groups at a time, and where TVs further flesh out the story. It is also here that you meet the first performer in the story, Trista's sister. The performers in Nightmare Realm are the other big differentiator from other haunted attractions. Most haunts I've been two fall into one of two categories. Either they spend tons of money on animatronics and props, or they pack the place with lots of random performers trying to scare you by leering, screaming, shouting, or banging on something without serving the story. Nightmare realm doesn't have a ton of complex animatronics (UPDATE: they've added lots more high-quality animatronics!), but the ones they do have are used extremly effectively, and the props are very high quality and all make sense in context. But the performers are the stars here. Each one has a specific role, character name, impressive costumes and makeup, and even rehearsed lines that continue adding to the story, but they are also able to improv and play off anything guests say in response. I've never had actual conversations with in-character performers in a haunted attraction until last night! Between each indoor scene, guests go outside through transitions that help you understand for instance that you're going from a house to a school, so the location changes make sense and aren't jarring. They now also have a couple of mazes between scenes that can get you legitimately lost as performers whisper from behind walls. I'll stop here since I don't want to give anything else away about the story or scares. One concept this attraction borrows from "Scream Parks" is the midway. This can be enjoyed before or after the main attraction and features fall treats like cider and donuts, picture stations, a screen showing scenes from classic horror movies, and some bonus scares from performers. New for this year, they've added a small walk-through homage to their home haunt roots. Each year they have a tweaked performance for the Christmas season that I tried and thoroughly enjoyed. They have also added a more intense, late-night "Slaughtered" version where the performers can touch you and an early lights-on walk-through guided tour, both of which I want to try at some point.
All in all, I highly recommend this excellent...
Read moreI am saddened that I have to rate our experience so low. In no way is this a reflection on the actors and staff, because they were very interactive, helpful, and kind. Some positives that my girlfriend and I enjoyed about this haunt.
The bus ride in set the mood, and we enjoyed the way rules and Trista was introduced.
The staff, more specifically, the zombie police officer, clown lady, and skeleton man were the best part of the haunt. Every character was committed to their roles! 5 STARS for all the staff.
We appreciate the time and effort that was taken into building the sets and design. It shows the passion and how much the owners care about entertaining their customers.
All that being said, here are the reasons why we unfortunately and honestly have to rate OUR personal experience so low (others may have had a better time than us). I, also, have to preface we went on the ONLY night the TOUCH portion was offered.
I wish that we were informed that the normal attraction and touch portion were going to be through the same haunt. In essence, we paid twice to go through the “same” attraction. Since we did both, the 2nd go-around (touch) we could anticipate everything, because we had just walked through. This definitely watered down everything for us. We think this can easily be solved with just some added information to make the patron aware in the future.
The theme of Trista did not particularly flow to us. After the short video we watched, everything else was not clear on how it was connect with Trista. Many of the rooms ambiguously tied together, for instance, the medical/doctor themed set, burn victim area, and football player. There must be ways to correlate the theme better to each room.
It was more “gross” than scary. The items that were shoved in our mouths and placed on our heads took away from the intended immersion experience. I think we would have much rather been physically touched more frequently than having refried beans/bugs put in our mouths and eggs busted over our heads. The experience was more uncomfortable/smelly than scary. Also, the piece of memorabilia (shirt) that we wore through the haunt was ruined and ultimately thrown away because of the smell and all the food smeared on it . A suggestion for the future is to make the touch portion more physical and use less food items.
We were extremely reluctant to put this review up, but I think it would be doing your haunt a disservice if we did not. Please do not take this as a personal attack. We just wanted to be 100% transparent about our experience. We fully expect next year to be better, and we hope that this information can help...
Read moreMy husband and I went there yesterday. The bus ride (the waiting, actually) was annoying, but the actors did an amazing job keeping us entertained. The actual haunt was fantastic. I like going to haunted houses and this one is now one of my favorites. The story line was well created and flowed with the actual haunt. I was concerned when they lined us up inside the building that we were going to run on top of each other (different groups) but that NEVER happened. Nothing like catching up or being caught up by another group to ruin the fun. The actors were fantastic. They played their characters well and did a superb job at making me and my husband jump! I also screamed a lot! The actors interacted with us, not just moaning of yelling out a specific phrase. One actor asked if I had been good, and when I told them "no", I was placed in a separate walkway from my husband. I could see him the whole time, but it was really cool to experience that. I honestly loved this haunt and will be going back again. If you are on the fence, DO IT! It...
