My son attended the 18-day Pacific Northwest Adventure a month ago and has returned home a better person. Drake just turned 15. At home with us, he is funny, playful and loves to talk. Out in the world, he has a hard time connecting and engaging with others. I decided to sign him up with Bold Earth after doing some extensive research in the hope that he will come out of his shell and allow others to see his best self. Drake had mixed feelings about going because of his social anxiety and lack of experience in the outdoor. It was really helpful to have one of his trip leaders call us a week before camp to introduce herself, find out how to best support Drake and to answer our questions. Drake's first 2 days were rough. I so appreciate Bold Earth Adventure for taking the time to immediately reach out to me. I shared some strategies with them and they promised to call me back. 2 days later, I received another call with some great news. With the support of his team leaders and 8 amazing fellow campers, Drake was opening up, participating, stretching himself emotionally and physically and having fun. That made me so happy. Bold Earth lived up to its mission and promise. The organization took a shy, and anxious young man and created a safe space that allowed him to open up, thrive and grow. This is what his team leaders wrote on their evaluations: "Drake's journey during the first few days of the trip presented some challenges, as he seemed hesitant to fully engage with Bold Earth and the activities. However, the transformation we witnessed in Drake throughout the trip was genuinely inspiring. By the second to last evening meeting, he surprised us all by leading the discussion confidently. Drake became a radiant presence within the group, and everyone appreciated his positive energy."

The Bold Earth leaders were incredibly aware and ensure everyone felt included, creating a natural haven for students to thrive as themselves. With local guides, they embraced daily wilderness adventures, including caving, rock climbing, exploring majestic waterfalls, and observing wildlife. They hand-fed elephants! Students weren't just tourists; they truly immersed themselves with the locals, even experiencing short homestays. This cultivates profound awareness and respect for foreign cultures, helping students learn that "normal" differs around the world. Gaining this insightful perspective at a young age will not only ease future travel, but also foster acceptance of others, contributing to more peace in the world. The trip helped build maturity and autonomy, as our child learned to navigate daily life without parental prompting. The program meticulously cultivated a safe and solid foundation, which is precisely what empowers kids to develop the bravery needed for independent and adventurous trips.
