Our adventure with Sitka Fishing Excursions was amazing! When we reached out to Nikki initially, she was full of information and very responsive! Nikki was very accommodating with our time that we had in port. The information about what was needed, provided, and where to meet was very detailed and easy to follow! We met Captain AJ on the dock right next to our ship and that was where our adventure began! The boat was very nice and comfortable. Captain AJ was very knowledgeable about not only the fish but other wildlife that lives in Sitka. On our way we were able to see whales and Captain AJ taught us about what life was like in Sitka and was very willing to answer all of our questions. We then started trawling for King Salmon. Captain AJ taught us what to look for on the Sonar and all 3 of us had salmon on the line within 2 hours of getting on the boat. The best part was that there were 6-10 other fishing boats in the same area we were trawling for King Salmon and we caught our limit before we saw any one else get one. We then decided to go fish for Rockfish! We caught our limit in Rockfish in less than 45 minutes. It was truly amazing! We then decided to try our luck at catching Halibut. Captain AJ dropped the anchor, and we were able to catch 2 halibut in less than 2 hours. Captain AJ showed us how to process the fish and we even used some of the salmon scraps as bait for the halibut. We were back to our ship in plenty of time! We are already planning our next trip out and telling everyone we know Sitka...
Read moreCaptain Jackson and Nicki of Sitka Fishing Excursions run a first class operation. I was able to flyout to Sitka with my 22 year old son (who didn't care much for fishing at the time) during his fall break from college and spend the day fishing with Captain Jackson. I have personally fished in Alaska and Canada for 25+ years, mostly fly fishing in rivers, but sometimes deep sea fishing and have hired dozens of guides, Captain Jackson has to be one of the best.
My son's first fish he ever caught in Alaska was a 60lbs Halibut right at the 50" slot limit (we had to measure it 3 times to make sure it wasn't to big to keep). After I caught my halibut we moved on to trolling for Silvers (and yes! I did say trolling). Most other charters mooch for silvers due to the large # of people on their boats. With his top of the line downrigggers we limited out on silvers within and hour or two and moved onto rock fish, and btw... if you have never caught rock fish on a reef then you don't know what fun is! It was pouring rain, the fishing was fast and aggressive as the fish were hitting the lure on the way down or up and the weight vs. fight ratio of Rock fish made it the funnest part of the day. My son and I couldn't stop laughing!
Thanks to Captain Jackson and Nicki for making our quick trip to Sitka one to remember. I am including a stock picture of the BlackJack because it is a beautiful boat that wastes no time getting you to the fishing grounds while the other boats leaving the harbor are chugging...
Read moreI have fished in Southeast Alaska for a dozen years. Great fishing and great outfitters. Unfortunately this is not one of them. Most charters focus on the customer experience - weather and fishing are always variables. The owner of this charter convinced us their boat has ample room 6 people to fish in a comfortable and high quality experience. In my opinion this outfit was much more concerned about lining their pockets that providing a great experience. We spent the entire morning trolling for salmon sharing 2 poles for 6 people - one person had to remain in the boat because the deck didn't have enough room. I have never fished in Southeast Alaska sharing a pole in a serious charter boat. The boat wasn't legally authorized to harvest halibut for everyone licensed on the boat despite selling all of us a salmon/halibut charter teip. Worse yet on this boat we spent less than 30 percent of our time with a pole in our hand. No surprise that we didn't come close to catching the normal catch rate. It was an awful day. The very next day we had much worse weather and fished in a similar manner with 4 people on the same type of vessel with a different outfit. We limited out our on Salmon and Halibut without issue. I can honestly say this is the worst outfit in a dozen years of fishing Southeast Alaska. It's probably why the had availably. Take the extra time to find someone else and avoid the frustration and wasted money, because that seems to be all this operation...
