1856 Country Store — Local services in Barnstable

This is a lovely, local, relaxed shop that has a nice mixture of pieces and products from local creators, artists, food producers, and the like. There are variations on the typical tourist memorabilia, books and activity books with a local slant. There are various small card games, board games, and toys to help families with younger kids, and of course there is the candy. There's a fun selection of all sorts of candies, gum, and confections in the back, with little baskets so everyone can try and grab favorites. This store has been there since I was a small child in town, and has been more or less the same through the whole span of my childrens' time growing up. It is precisely what it looks like, a laid back little shop with some snacks, candy, toys, jewelry and mementos that creates a tiny little fleeting community inside no matter where people are from and no matter if it is your first or hundredth time visiting. Just walking through the doors brings a smile to your face. I've been coming here for over 40 years. The country store has everything! Bring home some memories of Cape Cod. Maybe it's a towel with Centerville written on it. Maybe it's a pair of reading glasses you found you liked. Maybe you want to get yourself some "penny candy" - Which by the way, is the most fun! A must stop shop on every Cape Cod visit. Souvenirs, penny candy, jewelry, gifts, novelties. Awesome staff. Store is appealing inside. It can be a little tight getting around. But customers are usually observant and it's not an issue. If you have a stroller you will probably do better leaving it the car and carrying your little one.
