I was stressed after 12 consecutive 11+ hour work days and the lure of calming lavender was calling to me...
What a treat! The labrynith is absolutely charming, take your time walking the meticulous herbal gardens, listen for the sounds of wild birds, don't worry about the bees - my mother always said "If you don't bother them, they won't bother you" and so far, it's been true.
This is an amazing roadside attraction with jams, jellies, strudels, kitchen tkotches, you name it, it's probably there.
Huge shout out to the Cherry amaretto fudge - oh my goodness, if you're feeling sad, if you're feeling blue, this decadent fudge will bring you higher than Snoop Dogg at 2pm. I should have bought a bigger slice!
There is a small kitchen, outdoor dining and best of all was meeting the owner Barbara, the face of courtesy and hospitality.
I love to support local businesses - the very backbone on which the united States of America was founded - and it was my pleasure to buy several books, fudge and a dozen postcards from the store. If you feel the same way, contribute to Barbara and Cherry Farm and Market by buying a few memorabilia from her. I feel that farmers and merchants work very hard, are greatly undercompensated and give it their very best 100% and they deserve courtesy and gratitude.
I also interacted with Ruth, who watered the lavender and herbs as I walked through and she was kind enough to take a few pics of me in that scented, scenic magic place.
What was NOT wonderful was when I entered the market, a horrible woman was shreiking at Barbara, something about cheese sandwiches not being ready until 11:30 am. Barbara was almost on the verge of tears as the woman screamed, waved her hands, threatened, berated. UGLY BEHAVIOR. I later learned woman is a tour guide and her behavior was so appalling that several of the tour goers stopped to apologize to Barbara for the poor behavior of the tour guide. I spoke quietly to Barbara who said, wringing her hands, "I know I covered this information on the telephone with her" as she produced notes to substantiate this.
I tracked down that tour guide and reported her for abusive and highly unprofessional behavior and since most of her tour attendees saw her despicable, meltdown worthy of a true rhymes with witch, and I hope tour guide did not get a single...
Read moreCherry Point Market near Silver Lake Michigan is a quaint little Fruit & Veggie, Bakery, Market. But that is just the beginning! The owner Barbara is an award winning author and has her books at the Market available for purchase. Be sure to pick one…or all of them up! Any of them would be a perfect book to read while you are munching on a Cherry Strudel!
Cherry point is famous for their CHERRY STRUDEL, do not leave there without at least two because I guarantee, once a strudel is unwrapped you will suddenly find family and friends sitting at your table with fork in hand! They are homemade by Barbara and her staff and are absolutely delicious (as is everything they bake there). Oh, by the way they also ship them…great for gifts! A large welcoming Lavender Labyrinth and Herb garden are a must see. (mid-summer is best for full blossoms) The market is a frequent stop for us, and has been for many years. We’ve never been disappointed in their baked goods and we have tried almost every one they make! Prices are reasonable, in addition to the baked goods, there’s a variety of souvenir items, apparel, and lavender products.
Tonight a group of our cousins attended one of their outdoor Fish Boil Dinners. It’s a really unique experience that you need to try at least once. There’s a lot of history to the way the fish is prepared and Barbara gives a very interesting presentation on how the fish boil process actually works. The skillful “Boil Masters” do an amazing job of preparing the fish, and the big event of the process is when they throw kerosene on the fire to make the pot boil over, releasing the oils. It’s truly an amazing thing to see! We sat under big trees, on long, white, painted picnic tables sporting colorful pastel table cloths. There were a few children there, but the groups were mostly adults tonight. The food was more than plentiful… a delicious feast of Lake Superior Whitefish, redskin potatoes, onions, coleslaw, garlic toast, specially created herb butter, and best of all…tada!…a slice of cherry pie with ice cream!

Read moreWe first learned about the fish boil at Cherry Point about nine years ago. It was suggested to us by Sue Squire from Pentwater where we rented a house. We were a little reluctant at first but decided to give it a try. We are so glad we did. The finished product of white fish, potatoes, and onions is unbelievably delicious, as well as the homemade desserts and the cherry coffee. Even better is the history of the fish boil as told by Cherry Points owner/operator Barbara Bull. Barbara is an accomplished author and a great storyteller. The 500-acre farm has been in her family and she now runs it. They have a gift shop that sells various produce and souvenirs if you're looking for something special to remember the occasion. There is a beautiful lavender labyrinth garden to walk through after the delicious meal. We have been to Cherry Point eight times to date and have enjoyed every visit. It's not just the food that brings us back here, but the experience and camaraderie that Barbara and her staff share with their patrons along with Barbara's history and chemistry lesson explaining the fish boil process. Cherry Point is off the beaten path and a hidden gem of Oceana County. Call and schedule a fish boil experience and you'll be glad you started...
