Absolutely amazing experience. We spoke to the park ranger beforehand and they give us the heads up that This is the most challenging trail due to the altitude climb. Was also advised to make sure we bring water with us. Definitely recommended. Don't get me wrong, it is only 3 mile round trip, so it's not THAT bad. We took our 7 year old with us and she managed to make it the whole way. Getting down to the falls is a little steep. Not bad at all, but watch your step. Some people feel more comfortable taking the rock route to the right and some people feel more comfortable taking the tree root route (left)- I would recommend taking the tree root section. Much easier with little ones.
When you are walking along the trail, Once you get to the waterfall area you will notice that the blue hen trailhead sign says trail ends. Some people kept walking. But once the wooden rails end right next to where the bench ends, That is the ideal area to enter to get to the part of the waterfall you can swim In. Not super deep, definitely no diving or anything like that.
Everyone we ran into here was super nice. It might not be a bad idea for children to bring swimming shoes or sandals to wear in the water. Simply because the rocks get very slippery Our daughter is good in the water and she knows how to swim, However, the rocks are so slippery in some areas that she slipped a little bit and if she didn't know how to swim, she could have easily went under. Thankfully, she's tall enough to just stand up LOL - but a lot of children are not. ( the area right in front of the waterfall in the water Itself is a little slippery, and the rocks are weirdly shaped, so it is easy to misstep). Definitely coming back here!!
Also feel like this would be a great trail to bring a picnic with you. So beautiful here! When we went, you are unable to park on the side of the road. You have to park in the parking lot near the visitor center and...
Read moreBlue Hens Falls is best accessed if you park at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Guest Center. The Skii hill was closed and we could not park there. The Guest Center is not far off from the Skii hill. If typed into maps maps will take you to an old trail head, but parking is no longer permitted and barricaded. It is a bit of a hike to get to the falls, but it is sincerely worth it! I would not consider this an easy trail, there are lots and lots of stone and wood stairs with our handrails, lots of up hill hiking on your way there (luckily it is an out-and-back, so your hike back is much easier!) The trail ends at the look out over the falls, but it is plain to see that people have carved their own extension of the paths down to the falls itself. Signs everywhere say hike at your own risk, and if you are off trailing here I would take that into heavy consideration. On the way down is rough and back up is just as rough. There is a spot just off the overlook and hangs over the edge of the top most falls that is great for sitting and sticking your feet in and much easier to access, still off trailing here. There are restrooms in the parking lot to the Guest center. Take a map from the map stand, make sure you bring water, leave no trace. You will have to walk along and cross a road to get to the falls so if you have little ones please be weary, there is no cross walk or anything, just a sign that points you in the direction of the trail. Completely beautiful though! The rock formations, the falls, the hike. It is...
Read moreI always love a trail that leads to a waterfall. The trailhead used to be right by the falls, but now it is about a mile and a half away beginning at Boston Mill visitor center. There is 300ft elevation gain. It isn't a bad trail, though if it is wet, it is extremely muddy for the first quarter mile. The trail is under some construction and when finished would eliminate the most muddy part of the trail.
The falls itself is beautiful and worth the hike. The biggest secret is to keep hiking to Buttermilk falls. It is not apart of the national park, but it is allowed to be hiked. You will see a sign that says that this is the end, but you will notice continues. It is worth the hike. You will cross the creek a couple times, but following the trail is easy. It is worn in and pet friendly.
I highly recommend this trail to any beginner or avid hiker. Go when it's a day after a storm and you will get a lot of waterfall. Love this trail!
