Sassafras Mountain is beautiful. Went this past week to view Comet Neowise. That was my first trip to the Mountain, was not sure what to expect.
The small hike (walk, depending on your view of it!) was a little steep, but that's expected it being a mountain and all. I had seen other reviews and knew it wasn't the best trek up for anyone with limited mobile access. Which I can see why, the Obsevation deck has ramps for wheelchairs when you've gotten TO the deck. Otherwise it's going to be a rough journey getting to the deck unless you had additional assistance. But it's all well worth it.
The views were exceptional so long as it's not overcast. The sunset and night sky is jaw dropping, the stars greet you with splendor and you find yourself looking back at the sky as you leave wishing you could see them in such clarity all the time.
We had gotten to the Observation Deck at 7pm, they were going to keep it open later due to Comet Neowise closest trip to Earth that night. The clouds began to roll in and never left, we had horrible luck on that aspect, but were still able to find the Comet inbetween a brief break in the clouds. I had waited a month for that view of Neowise and Mother nature all but laughed in my face. I tried my best to wait it out as long a I could, but we left a little after 11pm.
The journey and drive back DOWN from the Observation Deck and then driving, oh both parts were terrifying. It's haunting walking down from the Observation Deck, unsure if you're being followed by a person or a wild animal (gotta love that snake and bears could be present sign, just fuels the terror and anxiety!)
All in all, I'm glad we went. Visual memories that will last...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA quick trip to Sassafras Mountain to check out their new observation platform after Church today. It is really nice except for two things. One is that they have a concrete path that starts just up the hill from the gravel parking lot to help those that are wheelchair get up to the platform. But the ramp that takes those same people up to the top of the platform is on the back of the platform and the problem is there is no sidewalk or walkway to connect the concrete path coming from the parking lot to the ramp. Those in wheelchairs have to plow their way through landscaping mulch to get to the ramp. This is a huge oversight on the part of the designers. Second, and a far less evident issue, is there are lights around the structure. which for a photographer like me, will make getting night shots a pain in the butt. Other than those two issues and the lack of attention being giving to the landscaping and old observation deck, it is pretty nice. Would love to see them pave the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeautiful views I am 2 years post stroke and walk with a cane the disability path is not as steep as the concrete path to the top from the parking lot but anyone wheelchair bound will have trouble being pushed up the concrete path once at the top there are stairs to climb to the platform the disability path is loose rock but relatively easy to walk on I used my fathers arm instead of my cane as it provided more stability due to the rocks I could not get my cane stable. It was definitely challenging but well worth it. I would not consider sassafras completely accessible to all those disabled . Per my Apple Watch it was about half a mile up the disability path with decent inclines and only a very low rock to sit on for a break the steep concrete path is much shorter but steeper I guess pick your poison distance and rocky or short, steep, and smooth. All in all I would do it again and it was definitely a...
