I booked a ducky kayak trip on the Nantahala River for myself and two others, including my younger sister. I made the reservation about an hour before arriving, after checking the weather and seeing what looked like clear skies. However, during our drive there, I noticed several concerning conditions: brown, fast moving water, downed trees along the roads, and signs of flooding or high flow.
When I called to reschedule out of safety concern, not due to rain but because of river conditions, I was told it would cost $30 per person to change the reservation. I felt pressured to stick with it, even though I was uncomfortable.
On the river, conditions were far more intense than anything I had previously experienced. Iâve kayaked before in flatwater and coastal areas, but this whitewater trip was on a completely different level. Within 10 minutes, our ducky hit a pile-up of debris near a bridge. My sister was thrown from the kayak (thankfully, she followed the safety float technique), and I became pinned under the kayak against a tree. I was stuck underwater, trying to lift the kayak with no success. I eventually escaped and floated after my sister until other paddlers helped us both get to safety just in time before serious rapids.
I later learned this river has a history of serious incidents, many involving duckies. I now believe the outfitter should have had more responsible screening and flexibility, especially for self-guided trips during questionable river conditions. There was very little onsite support or specific guidance for ducky safety beyond a quick training video.
I share this not to scare anyone away from outdoor adventure, but to warn others to trust your instincts. Research river conditions beyond just weather apps, and donât let money or cancellation fees push you into unsafe situations. I will be avoiding duckies going forward and will choose guided rafts when I return to the water.
Iâm grateful we survived, but this could have ended very...

Stayed here for a long rafting weekend and got exactly what I expected: a plywood-walled crash pad steps from the riverânothing more, nothing less.
The room ⢠Two wooden bunks (4 beds) in a bare-bones box. No linens, no towels, no storage. Bring your own. ⢠Price was $100 /night; at that number you start comparing it to budget hotels and it comes up short. Still, it passed the campsite-clean test: floor swept, no mystery smells, but it could use a serious scrub.
Shared bathhouse ⢠My photo tells the story: stalls looked like theyâd been cleaned and then immediately abused. Grime felt more âguest problemâ than staff neglect, but itâs rough either way. ⢠Tent campers downhill get only two porta-potties; the lower restroom by the tracks is closed for renovations. Saw at least two campers drive uphill for a morning shower.
Common kitchen ⢠Big win: upstairs lounge above the bathhouse has three fridges, a couple stoves, and plenty of pots and pansâall in working order. Wide-open, no lockers, so label your food or watch it walk.
Parking & check-in ⢠Dedicated Basecamp lot right next doorânever a space issue, even on a busy weekend. ⢠Self-check-in envelope if you arrive late. Map is fine in daylight, a little disorienting at night. Thereâs a number to call if you get lost.
Food on-site ⢠Riverâs End and Big Wesser Riverside Pub were solid all three daysâgood service, better-than-expected food, live music in summer. ⢠Bonus: the little converted bus selling fresh donuts and coffee. Donuts were great; egg sandwich tasted premade, but it filled the hole.
Bottom line Perfect for one- or two-night river trips when you value location over comfort. Wouldnât book it for a week, but for quick access to rafting, biking, or the AT, it does the jobâjust know youâre paying hostel prices at motel rates and pack...
