After discussing my project of sewing together my cross stitch work into stockings, Charlie assured me he was competent to perform the work. After paying in full for the work on 8/9/21, he said it would be a couple of weeks before he would begin work on them. Weeks went by, with excuses of delays due to other “bridal” work, and I did not have the stockings. I visited the store often to check on progress, even leaving a completed stocking for reference. We discussed in detail the project, including the velvet covered cording around the stocking. After weeks of excuses, I finally picked up my completed stockings on 10/4/21. I was appalled at the shoddy workmanship: velvet cording not sewn correctly, uneven stitching, loose threads, scorch mark on back of one stocking, and overall uneven margins. His response was to say that the work was performed as instructed; I pointed out the stocking example I had left with him , to no avail. I was denied a refund. Buyer beware – read the google reviews that mention lack of timeliness, poor quality of workmanship, and nonexistent professionalism. Updated 11/1/2021: After filing a complaint with the Triad BBB, there has been no response from owner Charlie of L & J Tailoring. See attached: This message is in regard to your complaint submitted on 10/5/2021 against L & J Fashion & Tailoring, LLC. Your complaint was assigned ID 15993156. BBB regrets that we were unable to assist you further and wishes you the best in your future efforts in resolving this matter. Sincerely, M 11/8/2021 Update: Owner accepts not responsibility for shoddy workmanship; my rejected statement of owner's irresponsibility: First, let me be clear: I paid Charlie $300 + tax to sew together 3 stockings, not because the task was too difficult or required an industrial sewing machine; my previous stockings were sewn on a home machine by a novice sewer. It is irrelevant to this complaint the reasons why I hired Charlie for this task, nor should a judgment be made as to my sewing competence. I provided a sample stocking(stocking named “Papa”) to be used as reference when stitching together the stocking pieces. Basic sewing skills were not used: (See examples): Irregular stitching on front of stocking; pieces not assemble correctly; seams should have been inside of stocking; loose threads; scorch mark on back of blue velvet stocking. The cording was not applied as instructed or as seen on the sample stocking. There are irregular margins. The layers of the stocking should have been sewn right sides together, and then the stocking turned inside out; this would have kept the seams inside the stocking and not visible. The stitching was so irregular on the front of the stockings that it covered the cross stitched areas. This was shoddy workmanship and areas of concern were pointed out to Charlie upon receiving items. He was given an example to use as reference and well as oral instructions. Of lesser significance although important is lack of timeliness in completing the project. Multiple excuses were made regarding delays in starting/completing the project.

Charles was funny, kind, accommodating, and fast with tailoring my wedding gown. He was knowledgeable on how to tailor my gown to make it fit perfectly. His alterations were affordable and I have already given a handful of recommendations for him, and plan to keep doing so.

The service I received here was quick, friendly, and very reasonably priced!! The gentleman who owns this shop knows exactly what he’s doing and what your garment needs to look its best. 10/10 recommend and I will be back every time I need alterations!

Beware…….seemed friendly at first. Immediately started placing pins in the two outfits needing alterations. He was also trying to get me & a friend to shop for the clothes there, which I must say were very pricey!! He even brought me two outfits to try on to purchase. He was bragging, I made a comment about him being the seamstress & he knew more about what something should look like than me & he was offended, saying he was a tailor!! Once finished pinning the outfits needing alterations he began telling me what was owed for the alterations. I took two outfits , but after learning of the price for the two outfits , I decided not to leave the second one. One was $107.00 & some change, for the two it was gonna be around $185.00!!!!😳 I only paid $318.00 for both outfits. Then I ask if he could meet my timeframe & he said sure! And that he would call me about picking it up. They say it was to be ready, I never heard from him, so I called to see if I could pick it up & he said oh yeah, but don’t come until 4:00 & it would be ready! Got there at 4:00, he was busy pinning someone, so I waited about 10 minutes until finally he speaks up & says he has a little more to do & if I could come back at 5:00, but he may not have it finished by then as he has other customers coming in, which is a phrase I heard about every 5 minutes!🤦🏻‍♀️ So I left, & figured he would not be done by 5:00, as customers were still coming in. I called him & told him that I would come the next day at 1:00 & I would need to get it, as I was leaving for an out of town wedding. Went next day, the outfit was ready & he allowed me to try it on & it was ok. He ask how everything was & I told him it was a bit tight under the arms, (while trying it on for pinning) I told him that I didn’t want it too tight under my arms….I ask could he let it out a little, he said yes but it would be the next day. I said forget it, I will be leaving out of town! The outfit had a small pucker in the back, that thank goodness I was able go get out using a steamer later. I got the outfit off & changed to leave & the store was empty…..he was no where to be found. I even called out 3 times & no answer. I guess it was his way of saying he was done! I hardly ever complain or have harsh words about someone’s business, but I have to warn you…….stay away from here! Alterations cost almost as much as...

I took my wedding suit to be altered by Charlie and had a moderate (about 3 stars) experience, however, I definitely believe in the future I could have a 5 star experience knowing what I know now, thus why I am giving this review 4 stars.

The Pro for my experience was that I've never had a suit look better on me and I've taken the same model suit (different color) to other local tailors in Burlington.

The Cons were that the suit wasn't ready by the agreed date despite plenty of time (over a month) and the communication was poor. I understand that spring is probably peak season for getting things tailored, but I still expect to have my item by the agreed upon date even if other people are coming in for last minute alterations that they need turned around within a few days or whatever. I never got a phone call telling me my suit was done, but when I called in he told me it had been ready for about 3 weeks. I'm gonna give Charlie the benefit of the doubt and assume this was just an honest mistake and he had forgotten to call me and it probably wouldn't happen again.

A Neutral is that I was a little shocked at the price when he was ringing it up ($153). Previous suit tailoring had costed be about 1/3 of that price, but in my opinion it is worth it because my suit really does look perfect on me. Charlie charges based on pre-determined rates per alteration. I had a lot of things altered (pants hemmed, waist brought in, butt brought in, jacket chest brought in, sleeves shortened, maybe the back brought in too?), so looking at it that way I do believe my price was fair. However, if you are on a budget or just want to keep in the know ASK CHARLIE about the cost of each alteration as he's pinning it on you. That way you won't be a little shocked when he's ringing you up.

I could definitely see myself coming back with another suit, dress shirt, or pants. Overall I had a much better experience here than with other local tailors in Burlington, even if I wasn't blown away with the business...
