Went to a travel ball baseball tournament today. Even though people were milling about, the most noticable happening was .... What did not happen! Nobody was hugging, shaking hands, or even giving high fives. And those were the kids playing on the field. Parents, teachers, and coaches appear to be taking this "outside threat" seriously. . Even after completed games, the kids did not line up and walk across the field to tell the other team good job. Families sat together, but seemed there was some separation from other families. Congratulations to staff of the field and the tournament director for not only let kids be kids, but giving guidance to all participants on changes because of " outside threat". Even though this may have been a larger gathering than may should be allowed, the kids got a day to be outside, playing a game they love , and not being cooped up in their homes for a while. The only change I think should happen if kids are going to have their tournaments is in the concession stand. Even though servers were some of the most courteous I have seen, they should be wearing gloves to serve , collect money, and...
Read moreCalera parks and rec is the worst! The new management is terrible and pulled Calera out of CASL and they have no idea what they are doing. They have ruined the integrity of the draft. The soccer director took advangage of a new coach. He let seasoned coaches pick whoever they wanted and take players from the new coach who didn't know better. The whole season has been so shady. They don't respond to emails from concerned coaches or parents. They have their girls soccer teams playing in a boys league! We used to love Calera Rec but something has changed and it is no longer fair and honest. Don't play soccer here! They arent paying their refs so the refs don't show or don't care. And I don't know why they stopped caring for the field but there are weeds everywhere! Go to alabaster, it's not that far. And at least you'll get to play...
Read moreAlthough a decent complex for fans (except for zero mirrors in the bathrooms), it is NOT a nice place for umpires who come to work there. Been umpiring for 10 years and I have never been to a place that treated umpires the way they did. The umpires came from 2 1/2 hours away to work from 9 am to 11pm (13 hours) with only 10 min breaks in between games and they wouldn't even give us water or ice during the games! They charged us for a very small cup of ice. We had umpires puking from heat exhaustion and they are more concerned about making money. It was ridiculous how money hungry they were. I've never been to any complex before that wouldn't even provide ice or water for the umpires who...
