Truly a step back in time. The whole idea of small-town America is perfectly encapsulated in places such as adorable Califon in rural Hunterdon County, New Jersey, which has the unique distinction of being the physical inspiration behind the setting of the 1946 Christmas classic, āItās a wonderful lifeā. In the heart of Califon is Ramboās, a truly vintage general store, delicatessen, and butcher shop. Iām not sure exactly how old it is, probably at least as old as my paternal grandfather, who would be 98 today. Iāve tried their 2 most popular sandwiches, the pastrami on rye with Swiss and the Italian hoagie, both were delicious. I bought some of their hand cut lamb loin chops, they turned out excellent with a jerk spice rub they sell. Iām very much looking forward to trying out their house made Italian sausage I got stored in the freezer. The store staff and managers/owners are very kind and welcoming and I am happy to support an awesome and storied local small business. Iām definitely planning on coming back here on a semi-routinely manner, perhaps even on a biking trip on the nearby Columbia trail...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRambos, a place to step back in time and to enjoy the local small town feel but high quality products. These places are becoming more and more rare to find and enjoy. I enjoy coming here regularly for some of the best sandwiches around. My all time favorite is their Italian sub, but if that's not your thing, they will custom make you any sort of sandwich that you desire. Their daily soups and specials are great on those days when your just not sure what you want to eat but want some delicious. Their burgers made from beef they grind and prepare themselves are amazing. Just ask for a double burger with lettuce, tomato, and garlic powder, that's all you need! Their meat selection is some of the best around and their quality is not easily matched by any local grocery store's options and quality. They have also saved me several times when I am lacking something at home and need it quick, coffee filters, milk, or their Vanilla Extract from Grenada. The staff is very friendly and a pleasure doing...

A few folks really talked this place up. First off, the entire place is old, including the kitchen. Many of the items on shelves had dust on them. I ordered the roast beef lunch special sandwich and a pickle. The woman behind the counter picked out the bread with no gloves, and made the entire sandwich with no gloves. Then she to put her entire bare hand in the pickle bowl. I was absolutely disgusted. I payed for the sandwich because I had already placed my order. Once I left and drove off, I pulled over on the side of the road, opened the sandwich and the pickle and threw it in the woods for an...
